Low lying posterior placenta

Hi Im 24 weeks pregnant with my second and I’m just wondering if anyone has flown with a low lying posterior placenta? (8mm from the cervix) It seems a very grey area and my midwife and dr haven’t really given me an answer. They’ve just said I’m at more risk of bleeding. I’m due to fly long haul to see my family so will have access to health care etc but I’m worried as I never had this with my first and I’m not getting any conclusive answers! Hoping someone on here has some experience or advice x

I flew to Turkey at 22 weeks after being diagnosed with placenta praevia and was told I would be fine to travel. No issues x

Sheridan oh wow that’s reassuring! I think I’m scaring myself reading things online and I just want a dr to say it’s ok but it’s abit wishy washy!! X

I was due to fly to Cyprus when I was 27 weeks and fly back at 28 weeks, I had a low lying anterior placenta (6mm away from cervix) and it’s my first pregnancy. My midwife said it would be highly unlikely they would sign me off as fit to fly (which I needed to fly back with jet 2 as I would of been 28 weeks pregnant). After a lot of back and forth with the midwife, she spoke to a dr and they said it’s a grey area because technically you’re high risk with the low lying placenta but the chances of it moving later in pregnancy is so high. The dr said he would write me a letter stating that I understood the advise and the risks if I did decide to fly. In the end I decided it wasn’t worth the risk and the worry that I now had that something might happen whilst away. I also wasn’t convinced that their letter would be good enough to fly with the airline so again decided it wasn’t worth the stress. To add to it, getting travel insurance quotes was nearly £500 for a weeks holiday.

I’m not sure if you need a fit to fly for long haul when you’re 24 weeks or not but had I of not needed one, I may have been more inclined to go however I wasn’t made aware until 2 weeks before I was due to fly that I was technically now high risk as it wasn’t really explained to us. I’m now 39 weeks tomorrow and I had a scan at 34 weeks and it confirmed my placenta had moved significantly away from my cervix and I’m now back to being low risk!! It’s such a hard decision to make but it’s entirely what you feel comfortable with! If you have access to healthcare and you get the right cover and declare it for your travel insurance then I imagine everything will be fine! X

Thanks Megan. Il be travelling back before 28 weeks so they don’t need a fit to fly. It’s a really hard one! Il see if I can talk to a doctor again this week but they are SO hard to get hold of! I think basically what I’m being told is that it’s my choice but I need to understand the risks. Thanks for telling me your experience, very useful! X

Yeah that’s exactly what it is, they said to me basically these are the risks and that choice is on you basically! I’m a bit of an over thinker and worrier so I just decided for myself it wasn’t worth the stress!! I think all I wanted was a straight yes or no answer so it was frustrating not getting that haha! X

Try not to overthink it! I needed the break after getting the news and it’s the best thing I did. Felt baby’s first kicks on holiday and it was such a special holiday for us. Fast forward to 32 weeks and my placenta has completely moved (2.9 cm away) and on course for a natural delivery on my due date 🤍
