Glucose test

I have my glucose test this Friday and I’m scared that I might fail it. I’ve been told that I have to fast from 10 pm the night before. Am I allowed to drink water while I fast? . Any advice x

You can drink water. I had mine on Tuesday. It’s not as bad as people make it sound. Just drink the drink as quick as you can. Maybe take a straw to help x

Yeah you can drink water but not allowed anything other than water. Weird they’ve said 10 as it was midnight with my last and midnight with this one. I’m sure it’s just got to be an 8 hour fast x

I also second drinking the drink as fast as you can, gets it out the way. And take something to keep you entertained for the two hours you need to sit x

@Samantha my appointment is early in the morning so maybe that’s why x

@Samantha I heard that the drink taste terrible and the wait is horrible but I will definitely be entertaining myself thanks x

@Samantha I've had two so far ( this pregnancy and last) and one coming up as well and they're all 10pm fasting. Appointments usually around 8.30/9am

Honestly it's not as bad as people say! Yeah drink is very sweet and sugary. Reminds me of some dissolvable orange vitamins or something. And the wait is nothing! I watched 3 episodes of my favorite show and it flew by! Take some food with you, that you can eat straight away! You'll be starving lol. Sometimes after the test you might feel a bit sluggish etc after all that glucose rushing through your body and might leave you feeling a bit meh. But other than that it's not too bad!

@Faith I actually didn’t think it was as bad as people made it out to be. It’s not nice but I personally wouldn’t say it’s the worst tasting thing ever. The wait is boring but there were 4 others in getting done at the same time as me the first time so we just chatted to eachother 😂 x

@Alina yeah my last one was at 9am and was told 12. They just said it’s to be 8 hours but said 12 to be on the safe side. Guess it’s like everything and different trusts have different guidance

I think the drink is awful! But I don’t drink sugary drinks so maybe that also made it that much more intense. But you just get it down through gritted teeth. Some people like it though or really don’t find it that bad so wouldn’t worry about that. Haven’t had mine this time yet but coming up next month. Had it last time for my June girl. In terms of ‘failing it’ - if you have GD, it’s not a failure or anything you can control. It’s just because pregnancy can cause an extra strain on the pancreas and the bodies ability to regulate insulin. So while it can be worrying and if you have GD there are things you have to do to manage it, the result isn’t in your control and it’s not a failure if you have GD.

I was diagnosed with GD around 12 weeks (they tested me early due to family history). It was a bit of an adjustment at first with the diet change but I’m really used to it now. Over time you work out what your body can tolerate and what it can’t. For example, I can’t really have much pasta or noodles, but I can manage rice and sourdough bread just fine if I balance the meal correctly with fibre, protein and fat. We got a takeaway curry this weekend and my blood reading was good! As Lauren said, it’s not a failure if you are diagnosed. There’s really nothing you can do to prevent it, it’s just a quirk of your body! There’s a community of people with GD on here too, so you never feel alone. And remember it’s only temporary! For me, the silver lining of GD is that you get extra scans, so I get to see my baby every 4 weeks 💕

Oh and re the test... Yes, it’s not the nicest experience, but it’s only a couple of hours. Bring a bottle of water to sip and something to keep you entertained for the 2 hours. My hospital is near lots of food places, but if yours isn’t then bring something with you to eat straight afterwards. Then treat yourself to a nice meal later that day!

I just had mine this morning. I know everyone is different but I actually liked the drink 😂 to me it just tasted like a capri sun! And the wait was fine, just take stuff with you to keep you occupied x

Had mine on Friday and tbh it wasn't bad. Drink tasted fine. The worst was the blood test because I faint if I don't eat so both times felt faint but found out today I don't have GD 👍🏻

Iv got my midwife appointment during the two hour sit so thankfully I won't be bored out of my brains waiting around 😅 mine is next Tuesday. Also 10pm fasting because the appointment is 9:15am

Does everyone get this or do we need to ask?

@Anna you only get the test if you have risk factors or have had it previously. If you look on nhs website it’ll tell you the risk factors. If your midwife hasn’t discussed it, unlikely you’ll need it

@Samantha OK that's great, thank you!

I think it tastes like a capri sun! I don’t think it’s bad at all. I just downloaded some tv programmes to watch. Just have water yeah. I stopped eating at 8pm as I didn’t realise it was 10pm! I thought I’d find the not eating until 11am the next morning really hard but it was fine. Good luck! X

@Keely strange. It's not recommended that you walk around loads 😄
