Water before a GTT?

Has anyone ever been refused a Glucose Tolerance Test for having drank only water in the fasting period? I had read the information on NHS site which stated water is allowed but was told by hospital staff today this is wrong and I was sent away to come back at another stage. I’m 34 weeks pregnant with my first, juggling work, added appointments over the last 4 weeks at the hospital and feel really upset by this as the information wasn’t relayed to me in the most sensitive manner.

Water can dilute the glucose drink and not give an accurate reading but that's a nightmare having to come back another time 🙈

I was originally meant to have my gtt in ballymena and i was allowed to have water then but i had moved address and changed hospital before that appointment to a trust which didn't allow water at all. I fainted during the first and second blood draw and still wasn't allowed even a sip. I don't understand how some hospitals have a different policy than others. The rest of the Uk you just get 2 drawers meanwhile here you have to get 3.

I was told not to drink anything including water and my test was in daisy hill, Newry. I think it can dilute the glucose drink! So annoying for you xx

@Jordan it’s definitely a DHH thing, I was so upset this morning. I spoke to my mother in law who works in a hospital in another Trust and the Doctor there told her water is fine. I get so faint when having bloods done and the idea of not drinking anything from the night before until after it’s completed makes me really anxious. 😥

@Kaylee this is my worry. I get get faint even having bloods taken on a full stomach never mind a dehydrated one. Plus it’s my understanding being dehydrated can really affect being able to access blood. It’s terribly stressful and upsetting. Xx

And on the letter they send and the wee info booklet it doesn’t say anything either, it should deffo specify that water isn’t allowed. I just knew because I have a friend who works in DHH and she found out for me otherwise I deffo would’ve drank away because at the end of the day it is only water 🙄🙄 hopefully next time round will be smooth xx

I had the exact same problem!! I have terrible veins so I usually have to drink as much water as possible to try and help them get blood. I ended up having to be poked 9 or 10 times for them to get all the blood they needed. I usually need to have a decent breakfast and bring lucozade with me just to stop me fainting. Was a terrible experience for me to be honest. One of my worst nightmares. Midwives weren't even understanding about it, they were quite rude. I asked could I do the finger pricking at home instead and was told no. Hope you get on okay the next time. It's not a very nice thing for people who struggle to get bloods done normally xx

@Jordan funny I had try to call the assessment unit Sunday just to ask that question and they didn’t answer so I googled it and NHS site says water is fine. I was told this morning the site is wrong. Hoping for a smoother experience later this week x

@Kaylee I’m so sorry this was your experience. I fear this will be me as I know how I’ve been before. 😓 thanks for being so honest. X

I was told water was fine and had it done on two occasions on my pregnancy, was even allowed to sip it during the test x

@Roisin do you mind me asking what Trust you were with? I can’t understand how different each area is. Surely it should be a regional approach! Xx

Im Northern HSCT - my test was done in ballymena, my letter actually said it was ok to drink water haha!! To be fair i think if you have it they will no regardless of water intake unless your very border line! X
