Do you let your baby suck on their hands?

So my baby is 3 months old and he keeps sucking on his hands a lot !! So I cover his hands all the time with his little socks and mittens… but my mom (she’s Mexican) has this superstitious thing that when you let your baby suck on their little hands all the time that their mothers hair falls out .. like a lot bc of the babies saliva. So I’ve been questioning it a lot lately but is there moms out there that purposely cover their babies hands and did you notice anything different from your baby’s learning abilities from preventing them from sucking their hands?? And did you lose any hair? 😭 I haven’t lost a lot of hair yet 🤞🏼.. But from what I’ve seen with a few people who let their babies suck on their tiny hands they always .. ALWAYS have a bald spot and losing a lot of hair… so can someone please confirm this superstitious thing for me because I’m too paranoid to let my baby suck on his little hands and I also don’t want to stop him from learning how to self soothe on his little hands bc I also know it’s important for him to learn..😭

At 3 months baby’s suck thier hands as they now know that they exist. It’s an important part of development to be able to bring their hands to their mouth for the future to be able to feed themselves Unless your baby is making his hands sore then let him suck away at them x

There’s no scientific reason to this. It’s just a coincidental superstition. It’s actually very healthy for a baby’s development and ability to soothe themselves by sucking on their hands. Especially now that he’ll be entering the teething stage. The volume of saliva especially is an indicator of that. Please stop covering his hands and just let him be baby. He’ll be so much happier for it.

Sucking hands is baby’s exploring their bodies, self soothing, starting to teeth or expressing they are hungry. Yes you do loose hair but that’s due to your hormonal levels dropping after pregnancy. I went through hair loss 4 months postpartum which is completely normal

Its superstition. My baby sucked on his hands until the cows came home and my hair loss was pretty mild. What causes hair loss is that your body doesn’t do its natural cycle of hair shedding while you’re pregnant and then once you have a hormone shift back to more standard levels around 3-5months postpartum your body drops all the hair it would have dropped throughout the whole previous year. There is no way to prevent that from happening, it’s just how bodies work. You will lose hair regardless of what your baby is doing with his hands. Now I’m also a dietitian and I can say that another factor for more extreme hair loss is mamas nutrient adequacy. If you aren’t eating well or if you are trying to restrict eating so that you can lose weight quickly, you might lose a LOT more hair. Because your nutrient stores are already compromised from pregnancy and if you are breastfeeding they are continuing to be impacted. So if you don’t want to lose more hair than you need to make sure to eat!

Its known as mouthing, it's perfectly normal so let them do it :) hands are tasty and good for exploring

Thank you everyone for the comforting answers I will let my baby suck on his little hands once he wakes up🥹✨❤️

I wouldn’t allow him to suck on his thumb for many reasons. Saliva on skin can irate and if done often can hurt the skin also his teeth will (obvi if he does this for long periods of time) I recommend switching it out with something he can suck on like a pacifier

We let our baby boy do it because it’s how they discover, we don’t use pacifiers and he hates them as well so it’s a win win

Hair falls out around 3-6 months postpartum, which aligns with the developmental period where babies suck on their hands a lot. It’s important for baby to suck his hands, this develops his motor skills, future feeding skills, emotional regulation skills, and develops the immune system. Do not cover his hands, this suppresses the neurological development of his hands. You will lose hair no matter what you do, and then will likely have hair similar to what you had prior to pregnancy

It’s normal for babies to suck on their hands. It’s about exploring their body and self soothing. My son would try to fit his whole fist in his mouth 😂. Also many women loose their hair in postpartum because of hormones. It’s normal but not everyone loses their hair.

I would think you’d stop babies from sucking on their hands to stop bad habits like thumb sucking. Other than that (I’m Latina) my sisters have boys and they all sucked on their hands and fingers at a young age. Your good mama. Don’t let your mom get to your head. Respectfully 😊

It’s my son’s favorite thing to do and I think it’s cute but it makes his hands so smelly😂
