Weaning

My baby is 5.5 months old and we tried him on baby porridge for the first time this morning. Would it be possible for us to puree some sweet potato for him tonight for dinner followed by a bottle, or is it too soon?

It’s recommended to try one new food every few days to check for allergies. I’d maybe do porridge for another couple of days then introduce sweet potato x

I would stick to one food per day while you’re starting. Then you can rule out any allergies as mentioned above, but also this is a whole new process for your baby. Their body has to get used to eating solid food, you can gradually add extra meals in but you can work slowly towards 3 meals a day by around 9 months. Milk is still their main source of nutrition before 1, and if you give them too many solids then they won’t be getting what they need from breastmilk or formula. I’d also go for more bitter vegetables first, like broccoli, spinach etc, rather than starting with a sweet vegetable as babies naturally have a preference for sweet food.

I tried different foods . Didn't have any issues .

Our health visitor just said one new food per meal. I think if you only do one new food a day/every few days you'll be trying new food for years

Our health visitor suggested 4 days let each new food and as said above to start with less sweet veg like broccoli

They say a baby has to try something up to ten times to accept it…

It’s also milk before food at this age as said above, it’s the main source of nutrition.

We try one new food a day at the min in order to look out for allergies. So far we've done green veggies, egg and peanut! I'll be doing wheat next in the form of weetabix I think
