Use of cutlery

Hey guys, my little one’s gonna be 2 in Feb. I still feed her in the mornings when she’s having cereal/ porridge, etc. She can use them, but finds it hard to have cereal or anything runny with a spoon. When are they meant to be able to use them themselves? x

All babies are different. Mine can use a spoon but struggles with a fork. Just keep giving it to her to practice with. Their bones in their wrist don’t harden until around 18 months old so they can find it difficult before that. She will get there 💜

@Sophie ahh okay! How do you deal with the mess? 😭 when I give her cereal, all of it ends up on the floor & over her and she barely eats any of it because she tries so hard to feed herself x

I’ve just started giving my girl a fork because she just uses the spoon to flick everything off her plate😂 but she loves the fork! She’s enjoying picking bits of food up with it but then pulls it off with her hands to eat it but it’s progress! She’s managed to eat off the fork one time but we’ve had 0 luck with a spoon, we still spoonfeed her too. Maybe try her with different cutlery? The fork also has to be metal she hates the plastic ones so try different types and sizes x

I’ve just started letting her use the spoon for her morning Weetabix because I just never wanted to deal with the mess at 6am 🙈 She’s getting better at aiming it in her mouth but having a hard time scooping it up so I’ve just been holding her hand with her as she does it. The fork is a little easier but I see sometimes she gets fed up and throws it on the floor and goes in with her hand 😂

They should really be doing it themselves by now - even though it’ll cause mess just let her have a go. My child is at Nursey and from when he started he was expected to be able to do it himself from just after 1 - it was hard at first as I used to feed him but he picked it up . Not he always tries himself sometimes he gets bored and I finish off . But there is no right or wrong xx

My son has only just started to use it properly, he would use a fork or spoon on occasion but always preferred his hands. He can say fork now so I think it encourages him to use it more. He uses a fork 80% of the time for meals and spoons for yogurts but not a lot for meals more for snacks x

@Habiba just a big clean up afterwards 🤣 to be honest he’s really good with a spoon now so it’s only a bit of milk he way spill but he’s got a full length bib on so I can wipe it away. He’s in what we call a Tweenies room in nursery so in this room they get them to use it to help as in the baby room they let them use their hands x

I give cutlery with every meal and she starts off great with it but usually around halfway through, she'll just chuck it and use her hands 🤦‍♀️😂 She tends to be much better at using it for cereal though but it is messy, even with a bib - we just give her it before she's dressed so that it's not her clothes for the day that are getting milk spilled down them 😂

@Lauryne yes!! I’ve deffo noticed the dislike for plastic cutlery lol. Same here, she does okay with the fork but the spoon needs some work on x

@Hodan Yeah I get what you mean, mine doesn’t like weetabix, so regular cereal is more runny & harder😩

@Jade yeah, every child is different tho. When I discussed this with healthvisitors they said cutlery use would get better at 2 years old 🤷🏻‍♀️ yeah they deffo get bored of feeding themselves! I’ve noticed after a couple of spoons, she gets frustrated and leaves it x

@Stacey oh yeah the use of hands is so much easier for them🤣 mine treats cutlery like it’s just there for decoration 🤦🏻‍♀️ x
