Using silver wear

So today at the WIC office, they asked me if my daughter was using silverware on her own and I had said no. We haven’t even started teaching her how to use it. I know that’s my fault. I should’ve asked sooner at what age to start teaching her. She can eat off a fork or spoon. She can also hold them(not correctly) and put them in her mouth but not actually hold the spoon, dip it into applesauce and put it in her mouth to eat. I looked it up and it said that babies should know how to do this by 10 to 12 months. I feel like crap because now I feel like she’s gonna be behind. Is anyone else’s kid still not really using utensils? I really just need some reassurance that’s she’s not the only one. I don’t wanna be the reason she gets behind. Yes I may just be overreacting/overthinking but it’s just because I care so much about her.

I dont believe thats true. It may be they can start to do that, but shouldnt be expected to eat properly with utensils until I’d say 2. Mine can put the spoon to her mouth when I preload it for her but not really load it herself. She tries though but thats about it

Mine is 12 months old and can't use silverware.

My son has no clue on how to use a spoon. If I give him rice he will hold the spoon in one hand and then grab the rice in the other. However he’s better with a fork. My boy like stabbing things and bringing it to his mouth but still struggles from time to time. Also one only really tried the last month bc we finally got our own place again

Mine loves her spoons and sometimes eats with it,,, but more with her hands and the mess she creates is unbelievable,,, but I don’t mind being her baby for some more longer time 😂

Eh idk my son and I like to eat with our hands lol. I eat with forks when we’re out at a fancy dinner, but I’m not about to have my son wasting food because I want him to eat with silverware he’d probably poke our eyes out lol I’m good😂 I’ll wait till he’s a bit older and his hand & eye coordination actually works better.

@Ela if I feed her she’ll eat or if I put food on the fork/spoon and give it to her she can put it in her mouth but she hasn’t figured out how to put the food on the spoon/fork and then eat

@Kianna she has great hand eye coordination but honestly prefers to use her hands. I had food on a fork and she took it off with her hands. I don’t mind feeding her, but I honestly prefer she eats with her hands because she eats better and she’s more likely to explore everything on her plate. Plus, she’s not a huge fan when you put food in her face she wants to do it on her own and she actually eats better when you aren’t paying attention(I’m by her just not starring)

Oh yeah I just let my son eat independently with his hands. It’s the best way. They like exploring textures and just doing things by themselves 🙂
