Brushing teeth

How do you get your toddler to spit and rinse when brushing teeth? Mine keeps swallowing the damn toothepaste and drinking the tap water instead of actually rinsing her mouth with it? I’ve showed her and done it with her numerous times, keeps happening 🤦🏻‍♀️

My little girl has just turned 4 and only started learning to spit in the last 6 months. When she was younger and I asked the dentist about it, he said it’s fine for them to swallow small amounts of the kids toothpaste as they don’t learn how to spit that young. I’m in the UK - don’t know if kids toothpaste is different or not where you are.

She's still a little young to spit. Start with blow. Get a tube of fluoride free toothpaste, but make it a small one, you won't need it for that long.

My daughter is 2. I just explained and showed her by brushing my teeth too and explain what we do and why

I also made it into a song

My 2 & a half year old hasn't learned to spit yet either.

My four year old learned a couple weeks ago. Just kept saying make sure you spit

I buy fluoride free toothpaste I will start working on him spitting it out around 3.5 years old

My husband taught our toddler 🤷🏼‍♀️😭 it’s so cute watching him brush his teeth. He grabs his stool. Sets it up, grabs his toothbrush and waits for me to put paste on it. I turn the water on and he does his thing

Show her videos of the wiggles or Mrs Rachel or Elmo and make a game out of it… idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ mine didn’t this too at one point and just stopped one day

That’s why you only use a small pea sized amount of tooth paste. It’s ok if they swallow a tiny bit. My son is 3.5 and he can spit now but sometimes swallows still. Just keep modeling and don’t use a lot..

@Portia ❤️ aren’t you worried about baby getting cavities? Did everything still look good the last time they went to the dentist? Truly curious.

@Nikki-Lee my pediatrician told me kids toothpaste is a scam because it’s literally the same as adult toothpaste just marketed towards kids. But I didn’t really see his point because my toothpaste is too minty for my son so I like the more gentle flavors and it’s not like it’s more expensive or anything.

Also practice spitting water out in the sink and then practice with just spit.

@Cassie good idea!
