Basingstoke hospital birthing pool BMI/weight limit

Hi all I'm going to be giving birth at basingstoke hospital this year and my midwife hasn't been able to.confirm if there is a weight or bmi limit for using one of the two birthing pools. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

Hey, I’m not totally sure but wouldn’t imagine that there is a limit, the room I gave birth in at basingstoke hospital had a birthing pool and it just looked like a larger bath!

Sorry no experience other than I really wanted to use the pool and had the room with the pool but they wouldn’t let me use it. Son had a kidney problem but was told by urologist that water birth wasn’t a problem but when I asked for it they over ruled and said I couldn’t use it - no medical grounds behind it - I think they just didn’t want to take any risks! 😩 if it weren’t for the kidney problem then the ey would have let me use it and I would guess I was about 15st - size 16. I had a water birth with my middle child and it was fantastic.

I had a water birth planned with my first baby & no one discussed weight or bmi with me so I don’t think it’s an issue. It’s basically a big bath so can’t see it being a problem. I didn’t get a water birth though sadly as they only have two and they were both in use. I’m planning to again with this little one due in April but knowing my luck they’ll be full again x

So if your under the obstetrician consultant for issues, then sometimes you cannot use the pool, also I’m a fluffy girl and I wasn’t allowed to use it, (reading hospital).. I mean I ended up having a c section early anyways so whatever, but if anything happened, it’s harder to get you out basically, hoisting you out sometimes they have hoists that only go to a certain weight limit ect, harder to manually remove you as well epsh if your bigger… IT SHOULDN’T BE this way at all and should be inclusive of all women, BUT they have to make sure medically it’s safe for you and the baby. When I say in fluffy I’m about a size 18/20 so not larger (politely).. but it depends on your care plan and birthing plan and what there stopping point is. Hope you get what your after! 🤍🤍

@Amanda there was a room but there were no midwives free when I was induced 🫣 they ran in when his head was coming out! But he did come super fast so was a surprise to everyone - the midwife from the induction ward was running back and forth between the other ladies being induced in the induction and me giving birth in the labour ward!
