Adding rice to formula

I need some advice, my three month old son is eating almost 7-8 ounces every hour and is still acting as if he is starving. He is in the 96th percentile and has always eaten above average. Everyone is suggesting that I add rice to his formula but I’m unsure if this would help him feel more full for longer. When did you start adding solids for your little? Would you start adding some at this age?

No no no!!!!!!!! This is so dangerous. For a start any solid food other than milk before 6 months is unsafe on their digestive system and can cause digestive issues such as IBS as crohn’s disease as an adults but rice in a bottle is an aspiration risk too. Please don’t do this. Are you pace feeding bottles? This seems like a lot for such a young baby

@Gem yes ma’am I am pace feeding, he has always eaten more than any regular baby even when trying to only give him the recommended amount he would ball his eyes out still hungry.

Sounds like there’s something else going on. Is he in pain/arching his back? Adding rice to formula is incredibly dangerous and is a choking risk.

RICE??? what….?!

Try using hungry baby formula. My son was similar before we introduced solids, he was eating way more than average. We used Aptamil but I would look for the hungry baby version of the formula you're using

Please don’t introduce anything other than formula at this age. As people have said it can cause life long digestive issues as their stomach is still developing. Also a choking hazard if given in a bottle.

My pediatrician told me that giving rice through a bottle is dangerrous. She also mentioned that she instead of rice cereal she goes more towards oatmeal cereal and will spoon feed it to baby if baby shows signs of being ready (sitting up with little support, interested in food, good head support) etc. we gave our LO oatmeal cereal for the first time the day he turned four months old with her okay! I would talk to your pediatrician and see what they say!

I started doing that around 4 months and I started puréed foods. Sweet potatoes mainly.

You can also add puréed food in a bottle with some formula/breast milk. A store bought jar is about 4oz.

Adding anything to a bottle except formula or breast milk is a choking hazard. There is not a single accredited pediatric institution that recommends it anymore. All recent evidence from the AAP, CDC and NIH shows that the risks of choking and long term consequences far outweigh the potential benefit.

Update : I had called and talked to my pediatrician for him, she actually suggested to do so but watch him closely while he eats.

Good. What worked for me was having my baby sit up while drinking it. Controls the flow better.

People are so quick to judge. You’ve done the right thing and contacted a health professional. You know your baby and what they need. You are stupid, you would never intentionally harm your baby or put them at risk. I hope it helps x

Please get a second opinion. This is incredibly dangerous and I don’t know why any medical professional is recommending this. Do your research.

If your baby is hungry keep feeding him more of what you’re already feeding him. I feel like I’ve seen this post before…
