You haven't failed her at all, it is good school have picked up that it maybe dyslexia which means she will get the help needed, but also there is so much difference in that age, that she may just suddenly catch up. But please don't feel guilty x

@Kath thank you! This makes me feel abit better x

I've listed some strategies I've used in my classroom in the past. Maybe ask school to trial and error some of these; multisensory input and activities (e.g., flashcards, puppets, videos, real objects, gestures); offer choices (e.g., drawing instead of writing notes); Use L-shaped cards / plain paper to frame / cover text or reveal one line at a time; Present new language in small, manageable chunks; break tasks into small steps; use concept-checking questions; frequent opportunities to recap and review language using varied techniques; personalised feedback (voice or video recordings instead of written comments); positive reinforcement; Adjust the colour of the whiteboard or background (pale blue or cream); assistive tools (coloured overlays, reading rulers, dyslexia-friendly fonts); technology (e.g., text-to-speech or speech-to-text tools); allow extra time or breaks for tasks; provide clear and concise instructions in both written and verbal forms xxx

@Louise thank you for this! X

I totally feel you. My son is in Year 1 and is now in extra intervention for reading, writing and maths bc he’s behind. We already know he has auditory processing disorder which affects his learning, but they now suspect dyslexia too. It’s so so hard to watch them struggle and feel like they can’t do it bc they know what their peers can do. I’m glad his school is giving him so much support (including a lot of the things mentioned in previous comments), and I work on building his self esteem and confidence in his talents, like he loves art and gymnastics and he’s amazingly creative, so we focus a lot on those strengths.

As a teacher and someone with Dyslexia I can tell you that they may be struggling now but with support from the school, you guys and some determination she/he will catch up. I was so behind at school with reading, writing and spelling and now have been teaching for 4 years as a special needs teacher. Try to find some themes that he/she enjoys and make it fun. Use shaving foam to splat letters and make their sounds, write in sand and on each other backs and also see what scheme the school uses to look it up and consolidate at home. Happy to help with any further suggestions. Feel free to Message me :)
