Gestational diabetes screening in the first trimester accurate??

Hi. My OB ordered a glucose test at 10 weeks for some reason. I have no history of diabetes and I didn’t have gestational diabetes with my first. My test came back at 142 and the range was 140. And they made me fast for the test even though I wasn’t supposed to. Is it accurate?

If you were fasting and it was high then it’s safe to say if would’ve been high if you weren’t. Maybe she saw something on past lab results.

@Haley 💚 it’s a new doctor that I had never seen before

I understand. Not sure where you live but sometimes different doctors use the same system so they can all see your past medical records.

I had that happen to me too! Not at 10 weeks, but the being only two over the limit part. As long as you control your carb intake there is nothing to worry about. Better to be safe than sorry in this situation. I ended up eating healthier when it happened to me which is better for you and your baby anyways. I am sure you can ask for a retest though if you are unsure.

@Elise I’ve mostly been eating fruit which is honestly why I’m confused. I ate far worse with my first so it’s not making sense

Fruit is high in sugar, so it is good to eat something with fat or protein first to minimize a blood sugar spike. Like cheese or nuts.

You can’t really compare to previous pregnancies because it all has to do with the placenta. My doctor had me do it “early” (20 weeks) because I have a high bmi. Depending on yours, that could be why they did it early?

I had Gestational diabetes with my first and now pregnant with second they said i can't have a test till 16 weeks, seems very odd they've asked you to do it so soon

I had GD with my first baby and my doctor asked me to take the test at 9 weeks for my second baby. My weight was good, but my history of already having it once meant she wanted to make sure I wasn’t getting it earlier in the pregnancy. I ate really healthy and was in the best shape and still needed to be on insulin. It’s one of those things that can’t happen despite a healthy lifestyle. There are a probably a few reasons to test early, weight or BMI, age and history of it.
