Have you considered Dyslexia? There are many types, but this much struggle might indicate something is making it harder for him. The best option is a neuropsychologist as they can provide a formal diagnosis. If you find this is the case, I have found this program to be life changing for our family. https://bartonreading.com
My kids both struggle with Reading but the app teach your monster to read has really made a difference.
Drop them off at Barnes and Noble and go run an errand
What helps my kids is graphic novels like dogman series or captain underpants… and subtitles in everything we can! And honestly my youngest was struggling with reading and got to a point of hating reading until I took them out to homeschool (I know it’s not for everyone) but since taking her out of school she has leaped in reading… i think forcing kids sometimes makes them not enjoy it.. doesn’t help the bs sight words now… I use phonics cuz that’s how i learned… and i would also look into learning disabilities
@Mary Lenahan downloading now!!! Thank you so much.
@Alicia lol … Sorry but Barnes and Nobles sucks me and my wallet in like a black hole… I think he would have to leave me 😂
Oh there are also YouTubers that my kids watch that read books they like to watch those… it makes them want the books at home to read
@Megan I will check this out and bring it up to his Pediatrician as well
@Briana that sounds like the ultimate mom hack - doing it now! Thank you so much!
@Lyss thank you, I will go by the bookstore and get a few graphic novels.
My advice might be controversial but here's my thoughts. I have a 10 year old daughter in 4th grade. She is average in reading and slightly below grade level math. I was a straight A student through school but as parents we need to remember that our children are not us. Think about the "I need for him to improve..." and focus on how you might be able to make literacy more relevant and engaging to your specific child. Take library trips together, replace device use while in the car or waiting around places with audiobooks, and even consider finding a series that you both love that you could take turns reading and discussing. I obviously don't know your child and wouldn't know if there might be a more significant learning issue going on, but children advance at different rates and putting too much pressure on them too early could have a negative impact in the long run. I'd recommend focusing on being a supportive parent and asking the school how they are addressing it. I taught 7 years of Elem. Special Ed.
@Cassie no controversy and I am so appreciative that you are sharing you expertise with me. I am taking notes and hoping I can implement some of these ideas ASAP. I have had conversations with his teachers and the feedback we received was - if he doesn’t want to do something he won’t do it or won’t try. Thank you again - I truly appreciate your help
I had my then 8 yo read me a chapter from a children's book every night throughout the summer. (Box car children and magic tree house) He's 9 now and in 3rd grade and really doing well with reading, but when it comes to math word problems, he tends to struggle too. He also has adhd so... that complicates things a bit also.

@Toysha I'm disappointed in the education system truthfully& I'm sorry that's what you were told. 😞 As a former teacher, it is a schools responsibility to intervene and provide appropriate intervention when a student is struggling.Instead of providing sufficient resources and teacher training, I've found that many schools are letting kids slide by and fall through the cracks and then blaming them and their parents. My daughter was "behind" in reading but I chose to instill a love of books and stories and gently supported her reading development at home just through higher exposure to books she was interested in (even if they were too easy or too hard). I tried not to over-correct and she is now at an average level and doing okay! It sounds like your son might just be shut down from lack of confidence and/or hasn't found books that are engaging to him. If he's shut down about reading in general, tutoring or any formal extra practice won't help.Try graphic novels and magazines too. I hope things turn around ❤️
Since he enjoys watching the tv and YouTube, I suggest you play educational films for him to watch. Remember, learning isn’t only done by reading and writing. Play great speakers for him to listen and watch. Trust me, his conscience will be judged and he’d use his hand and go back to reading and writing
Contact the public school and ask for an IEP evaluation. My son also struggles with reading. They have like 60-90 days to test them. Then they will help your child at school.
My son has the same struggles. He was recently diagnosed with ADHD. He sees an occasional therapist at school.
Try Adventure Academy online and Time4Learning both are excellent resources for literacy and reading comprehension skills. They both can transform a child into advanced level reading by using gamification in their curriculum.
I help with this for a living. $127/month for reading, which includes 5 days of practice/week, 2-3 of which are on Zoom with me. $87/month for writing, and everything else. Bonuses: FREE Adventure Academy, FREE Get Epic, and more! My program is designed for kids with ADHD, and kids who prefer screen time. You can text me at 916-439-8188, or email me at maureen@kindergartenprepandbeyond.com. I’ll share with you what we use and our method, and you can ask questions.
In addition to any other tips offered, turn the closed captions on! My kids found it annoying at first, but they’ve learned that they can sometimes slightly read ahead and they love that. It also helps with word recognition. We have CC on both tv and YouTube at all times.
