Testing after giving birth

Hi lovely ladies, hope you’re all well. I was wondering if anyone knows, once you’ve had your little one do you still have to keep testing and monitoring your sugars like you do throughout the pregnancy?

Hey! I’m on insulin and metformin for my GDM. My diabetes midwife said I’d come off all meds after giving birth and won’t need to monitor after meals anymore. 3 months postpartum I need to go to the GP for a HbA1c blood test, which gives an average blood glucose reading of the last 3 months.

Nope, once baby and placenta is delivered you won’t need to test. You’ll need to get a test done via the GP 6-12 weeks after birth to look at your sugars over a 3 month window to check things are back to normal again. Then an annual blood test needs to be booked in around the birthday of your child.

Hey! I was on metformin, after having my LG I didn’t test at all or take meds but she needed her heel pricked before feeding the first 2 times just to make sure she didn’t have diabetes or anything. I had a blood test before my 6-8 week check at the GP and I think we then need to do one yearly I want to say for 5 years now just so they can monitor it and check we still haven’t picked it up again

No need to test or monitor. They tested me at the hospital and then I took a glucose test 6 weeks PP to make sure it was gone. If it’s not gone, they then refer you to your main doctor for type 2 diabetes

Thanks so much ladies! Cannot wait to not have to prick my finger 4 times a day 😅
