Starting solids

Hey Moms! I have a 4 month old, turning 5 next week. I’ve tried starting solids for him aka Oatmeal, however, when placed in a chair, his whole body leans forward. Does anyone else experience this issue?

It sounds like he’s not ready to be sat up and solids aren’t usually recommended until 6 months anyway This could cause choking if he’s not able to sit up unaided.

Mine leans to the side lol but her ped said she was 100% ready for solids. Shes gotten better at sitting in her high chair tho

I don’t understand when parents and pediatricians support feeding babies so early. If they do not have the muscles to support a safe eating position they should not be eating. I’ve also heard they lack the proper digestive enzymes until about 6 months anyways. I don’t understand the hurry and never will. I waited until 6 months with my first and will be doing that again! My pediatrician does not recommend earlier than that.

Sounds like he isn’t ready to sit up quite yet. Babies shouldn’t be in a high chair until they can sit unassisted as this can damage their spine. Also talk to your pediatrician if you haven’t already to see if your baby is ready to start solids..

Sorry, reading that back comes off much harsher than my tone meant to be ✌🏼 just saying you can wait and not feel like you’re falling behind! Your baby will be ready in a few weeks time

@Allison I don’t even need to add my comment, you literally summed it up perfectly.

Their stomachs aren’t developed enough for solids until 6 months.

I use to sit mine for short periods of time during the day just to get him use to the chair first and work on his muscles. At the beginning I use to use towels to keep him in place and with times I would take the towels away. Put tho towels on his side one in front. Then I would take one of the towels off. Another day one other side to work on his balance.

@Allison u know in diff countries babies start way earlier than 6 months right. That’s just the American standard. In Jamaica where I’m from babies start at 4 months. I was doing research and found out some countries start as early as 2 months. To each his own. If u don’t want to start your baby that early that’s great but that’s you.

Thought so! He definitely is not ready, will wait. Thank you everyone!! Very helpful!

@Jody It’s not just an american thing it’s the same here in the UK and i’d imagine plenty of other countries. look up ‘open gut’, babies stomachs & intestines allow larger molecules to pass through into the blood stream to better absorb nutrients from milk, ‘gut closure’ occurs around 6 months, so from then on it is safe to introduce solids. Introducing solids before gut closure can have serious consequences, whether it’s immediately or later on in life

@Lauryne I’m about to be 25 with no gut problems. And I never said America is the only country that waits until 6 months. I said it was an American standard and then I went ahead and said other countries have different time frames on when they start solids

@Jody Look up open gut 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yeah for us when we stared he still wasn’t a fully unsupported sitter but was pretty good when up against something. So we had a high back chair with straps for around his shoulders to help him stay up

@Lauryne some babies need to start solids earlier because of weight issues so you can’t generalize as each case is different! Also in France and other countries they start solids at 4 months and so far, they are doing very well 😊!

@Allison let’s not judge what other moms do, they have their reasons and their doctors too! We also live in different countries with different guidelines.

@Jody, you are right. My son, who was born in jamaica, started a 3 months old.

@Sasha-gaye lmao Jamaican parenting is diff , my godmother gave my 2 months old water 😭 and she loved it. My SIL told me she gave her baby a chicken bone when she was 4 months lol
