How to teach bub to use cutlery (spoon / fork)

My boy only uses hands to eat, my fault I wasn’t very consistent on giving spoon.. as we always served finger food which could just be picked up with fingers. Now is not interested in using spoon / fork. Any tips pleaseee , and also what to expect

We're in the same boat to be honest. I've just started to put the spoon in his hand and then put my hand over the top to guide his hand. Definitely interested in any tips though 🙂 x

Using hands is so important, they experience food differently and it’s great way to introduce new foods ! Honestly it will just be time, keep offering and they also watch you eat with cutlery, I wouldn’t worry yet :) ❤️

We've been the same and haven't always put a spoon and fork out but in last week or so when we do she does copy us. So think it's just time and practice. Try and put them out with each meal, use them yourself for your meal and see what happens!

Exposure and model the behaviour although using hands is so normal at this age!

Lots of practice! My daughter is good with a spoon (the bibado ones shaped like an oval are easiest for her) but fork she can only use if I spear the item for her. She gets bored of the fork and just uses her hands, I don't blame her! I'm not worried yet, I assumed they don't use cutlery properly for another year!

Don't worry too much or put pressure on yourself the main thing is they eat at all! Lots of cultures don't use cutlery lol. I tried at 9-11mo then we had food refusal and the child has to be motivated to eat. Started again at 13mo and basically we take turns and I guide his hand. He's really good and can do it but often just chucks porridge everywhere or throws full spoons 🙈 so if he's in a wild mood I will let him try with only a tiny bit in his bowl which is suctioned onto the table. Normally the end of the meal. And despite the suction he can rip the bowl off 🙈😅

Exactly! He just rips the bowl off and bye bye food on the floor! Btw 1 shall we go dessert spoons or the silicone / bamboo ones? I have seen him use dessert spoon sometimes, he wouldn’t scoop butwould try to eat whats on the spoon
