GTT Test

Just had my GTT drink and honestly didn’t find it bad at all like a slightly thick strong lemon squash. I read so much online about it being awful so wanted to share a “positive story” for anyone else dreading it 😀

I had mine Friday gone and I feel the same way. Only thing I have had was a really bad stomach with it a couple of days after

Same, mine tasted like lucosade drink as it was the orange flavour and I’ve craved it once or twice 🫣 I liked it, just wish it was cold.

Mine was like a big orange Capri sun. The ladies who did the test at my trust said that they were having issues with people, especially pregnant ones, keeping it down, so they switched to the pre-packaged pouches rather than the powder that they mix up there. I remember the first one I took about five years ago was the powder and that one was rough to drink, but the pouches were easy. The only difficulty was drinking so much so quickly, but they give you about five minutes to drink it so it's not like you have to chug it.

Thanks for sharing! I’m having mine in 10 days. May I ask how long did you need to wait for the results?

I found the texture the harder part, the taste isn’t awful it’s just a weird texture as it’s thicker than you expect a drink to be. I’ve just done my second test this morning and it’s not terrible. Just a boring wait. On the plus side I found that the thickness of it made me feel like I wasn’t hungry so made the not being able to eat part easier!

I have mine tomorrow and straight after I have consultant and anti d. Dreading it

@Abbie my suggestion is drink a lot of water today, being hydrated really helps with the blood draw and there's only so much water you're allowed to drink during the test

@Nora I literally just did it this morning but they said I’ll get the results tomorrow on badger notes

@Elizabeth definitely agree with this as the first time I had it done I was quite dehydrated and it took them a few attempts to get my blood which wasn’t very comfortable

@Zoe yeah I'm usually pretty good for blood draws but I didn't drink water the day before mine two weeks ago and I got stuck 5 times and she had to work to find my veins. I'm still bruised. So from now on I have reminders to hydrate before any blood draw appointments 😅 So really, drink water the day before and then a bit the morning of. I think once you have the glucose drink you might not be allowed to have anymore until the second draw, but that might depend on the drink and your trust.

Mine was just in a plastic cup you get from the water dispensers, it was just like a thick warm lemonade! Had drunk it before she even finished telling me I had five minutes to drink it 😂 nurse was lovely too, and came back negative!

do you have to wait at the hospital for the 2 hours or do you leave and comeback? also how fast do you have to drink the drink as i think chugging would make me vomit instantly

@Aimee I wasn’t allowed to walk any further than the waiting room and the toilets as it can affect the readings (exercise/walking can make them go down) - so be prepared for a long boring wait!! I was also told I had a max of five minutes to drink mine but it was honestly gone in seconds but I didn’t have the big ‘capri sun’ style pouches, mine was just in a plastic cup!

@Aimee you stay for the 2 hours - that was the worst bit! Bring something to do - you have to rest during the 2 hours as well as stay fasted. You have 5 mins to drink and mine wasn’t a huge amount

@Aimee I had to stay on hospital property, nearby. They don't want you exerting yourself much as that can affect the way your body handles the glucose. But I was allowed to go to the next building over with the bigger lobby and comfy seating, so worth asking where you can go.

when do you have the GTT test? j don’t think i’ve had this yet! xx

@Sinead if you need to have it I believe it’s usually around 28 weeks from what my midwife told me. Not everyone needs to have it. I didn’t have it done in my previous pregnancies but because my mum now has diabetes I needed it done this time

@Zoe ahhh okay! i was gonna say i don’t remember having it with my first but it looks like a lot of people are having it, thank you for the information xx

As above, had my GTT yesterday, in the white pouch containing 300ml, just tasted like a capri sun (I actually really liked it 😳), felt bored but nothing else and been fine today! X

Oh I completely agree it’s just like an orange capri sun! lol x
