Schooling

My little boy is 3 and non verbal due to low tone around his facial muscles. We've been told he will be fine to attend a mainstream school with additional supports in place but I'm worried about it tbh. I feel that he would be better supported at a special needs school, And although it shouldn't matter I want him to feel that he fits in and not be bullied! Does the decision lie with us as parents or is it up to the schools? He won't be starting until September 2026 but just trying to get organised

I’m not sure about where you are located, but my younger brother has CP a bit more sever than my son, and he went to a school specific to needs from kindergarten until grade 1, and then was integrated to a mainstream school. My parents had the choice since his twin was going to mainstream school, but they did have to apply to the private school and get him assessed to make sure that school was using their resources appropriately for kids who would need it. It would be worth looking into! Our main benefit was they had a physio centre attached so his physio could come pull him from class, and they also had a therapeutic pool so they were taken swimming once a week and had the support and resources for that to be done safely as well.

@Tori that's really helpful to know. My son's is fairly mild so I'm not sure if that will make it more difficult in trying to get a place at a special needs school. I will definitely look into it, thanks x
