What’s the protocol at your maternity triage?

Hi, I went into my maternity triage earlier today for reduced movements. Was hooked up to the monitor as baby started moving around 20-30mins after that so that was reassuring. However, they wouldn’t let me go home until babies heart rate reached and stayed around 160bpm for atleast 10 minutes. I thought this was bizarre as when I went in for my last pregnancy I didn’t have to stay for that. My babies heart rate was between 130-140bpm the majority of the time which when I searched it says that’s within normal range. The worst part was that she was making me chug water to raise her heart beat and I kept needing the loo so being taken of the monitor and restarting the whole thing 😂 she also said if it doesn’t reach that I will be admitted for continuous monitoring and if I didn’t want too I’d have to self discharge. Anyone else heard of this before ?

How many weeks are you? That’s very odd of her. A normal fetal heart rate is between 110-160bpm but depends on the gestation as to what is ‘normal’. For her to want it to get to 160bpm that sounds unusual. (I’m a midwife myself). You could always ask for someone to review the notes if you’re concerned.

@Lottie 27+4 xx

@Jana yes it was one of them machines x

@Jade seems very weird. I’m glad all was well with baby, don’t be afraid to speak up next time if it happens again. Maybe she got confused or didn’t realise what she’d said?!

@Lottie my mum was with me luckily and she kept asking if the heart rate is normal why are we still here. Couldn’t get a straight answer x

@Jana when it turned green I was like thank god coz there was no way my babies heart rate was reaching 160bpm for a long period of time!

For the criteria to meet and the button to turn green there needs to be some episodes of high variation. So maybe that’s what she meant?

It's probably just to hit the criteria on the machine? When I went in once, my babies heart rate was ok but at one point wasn't raising like it should after she moved so they kept me for longer until they were happy that her heart rate was increasing after she moved (like ours would if we jogged or something).

Could be a misunderstanding? When I was getting NST’s they did look for increases in baby’s heart rate and wanted to see it over a certain period of time. The nurse specifically mentioned the 160 number to me as well and then said they wanted to see several dips and rises to see if baby can regulate their heart rate in a certain period of time. Maybe that’s what she was trying to say
