I was diagnosed really on in my pregnancy and having being induced last time thought my chances of a water birth in the birth centre were shattered. However, my midwife said because they are able to administer the antibiotics required in the birth centre, I can still go ahead with that plan 😊 my friend is a midwife at a different hospital and they also allow it too x
@Anna thank you so much for this, that’s really reassured me! Did you have to go to the hospital straight away rather than waiting for your contractions to be a certain time apart? Ultimately if I can’t have the birth I want then that’s fine, as long as my baby is kept safe I’ll do whatever it takes! X
@Kirsty that’s amazing news!! Thank you so much for this! X
@Louise that’s alright!! I believe you’re only meant to go straight away if your waters go (id always call and double check though) but I got to 9cm and they eventually had to pop them😅 I went in when my contractions where every 3-4 minutes lasting 50+ seconds, by that time I was 4cm! And that’s the best mindset to have, I was exactly the same, just try and stay as open to everything as possible because that way you’re not getting your hopes up. In the end, I don’t actually think I would’ve liked actually giving birth in the pool but I still would’ve preferred it for pain relief xxx
My midwife has said it is fine to have a water birth still in the midwife led unit. That's the first thing I asked as have my heart set on a water birth. I also got re tested at 36 weeks to see if I still had it x
@Anna thank you! I’m going to get onto the midwife today just to find out do what the local policy is and at least then I’ll feel a bit more prepared xx
@Laura amazing thank you!! X
I think it’s dependant on your situation at the time. I had my little one on 27/01 and I had to go to triage just before Christmas for some pains and they did a swab while I was there and it came back positive. After Christmas I had to go back for something else and while I was there, baby wasn’t as active as normal and the noted it down as reduced movements - two weeks later I went into labour and I wasn’t allowed to have a water birth but it was more a result of the reduced movements rather than the GBS as they need to continuously monitor baby. As soon as you go into labour they will give you a dose of antibiotics through a drip, and I think they normally do it every four hours (mine was different as I am allergic to the normal antibiotics they use so it was every 12 hours). They’ll monitor baby after birth for 12/24 hours. I think if you’re open and honestly with the doctors, they will try to accommodate your wants as much as possible! Best of luck with everything! Xx
