Shaving before C-section

I had my pre-op today for my elective C-section. At the pre op she told me that I should shave the hair at the top where they will be doing the incision before the surgery. But everything I've read and been told before says that I should stop shaving a week before the surgery. So now I am really confused on what is the right thing to do. I would much rather not shave, I don't shave anyway and I am very prone to ingrown hairs etc and my hair grows back in a day due to thick and dark hair. Also how do I know where they will make the cut? If they need to shave it surely makes more sense for them to do it. I'm not even sure how I would even shave when this heavily pregnant 🤔 What did others do/ what were you advised?

I had an emergency c section and didn’t shave didn’t cause a problem

I wasn't advised to shave but did. However I think they'll just shave it for you if you haven't

I had an emergency c section too and also didn’t shave. They did a little shave where they needed to cut but that was no problem them doing it, like you say how will you know where!

They shaved me both times, no way I could see down there 😂😂

I’m also prone to ingrown hairs and didn’t shave (wasn’t expecting a c section), they did however shave the area before the operation.

They shaved for me last Friday and now I can’t lie it feels horrendous I kinda wish I’d known before and shaved myself. It wasn’t till I was laying there and they said we’re now shaving where we’re going to cut 😅

I work in theatres and normally we prefer to shave the patient as it’s advised to use an electric shaver over a standard disposable razor. disposable razors have been shown to increase the risk of infection. We would also only shave where needs to be shaved. If you choose to shave, I would recommend doing so a couple of days before but if you choose not to, be aware that they may shave some of the hair where they plan to operate.

I shaved the night before, didn’t cause any issues x

Hair removal cream and an exfoliation glove will do the trick, when I did pre op meetings that’s what I would suggest. But shaving is fine really. I personally shaved the night before, I just stood in front of the mirror. Also theatre staff normally shaves patients who didn’t have time or was emergency.

All I’ll say is from my experience you don’t want the dressing coming off when you haven’t been shaved 🙈 xx

@Jess have a look at buying silicone scar tape for after your dressing are removed. I used it myself after my c section and also on my neck following thyroid surgery 2 years ago. It can stay on for a week. Cut it to size yourself. You can shower and it won’t come off.

They will shave it for you if you don’t

I had a wax exactly one week before my planned c section (on the advice of my midwife!) and was very glad that I did. I just had the top few cm waxed off, didn’t do the sides or anything else

Both times I’ve been told to leave it and I’d be shaved just before the surgery

I wouldn’t shave especially if it’s so close as you could actually increase the risk of infection. Use hair removal cream. The less hair there is the easier it will be to remove the dressing when that time comes. All the best with you section 😊

I was told I would be shaved if it didn’t so I made sure I was before going in - also bare in mind you won’t be shaving down there for awhile after as the bandage is there and also shaving near a scar is a no so I definitely wanted to be clean shaven down there x

I was told specifically not to shave and they didn’t shave me either 😅

I didn’t shave but I got sugar waxed and was completely fine!

Thanks all for sharing. I think I'm going to leave it. There's so much contradictory info and advice out there and it seems like if they shave me they will use an electric shaver which will be much better for me as I'm so prone to shaving irritation. I don't like being bare and have no absolute interest in using hair removal cream or wax.

If they need to shave you they will.

I was told not to shave for a week before so I shaved exactly 7 days before. My hair grows back very fast and they had no issues and didn’t even have to shave it for me. X

No one told me to shave, they’ll shave you don’t worry
