Silicone plates for babies

Stainless steel. Silicone is definitely better than plastic but it can hold onto soaps you wash with and make food taste gross. I didn’t believe it until I tried my kids food and it tasted like soap 🥹

I’ve had no issue with silicone!

They’re not really bad but I do recommend replacing them once every few months because they absorb the soap and make all food that touches them taste soapy after a while

I have silicone bakeware I've had for years and the food that comes out does not taste like soap.

@Kate generally bakeware is not used and washed every day. I’m assuming that has something to do with it. I never experienced it with my silicone cupcake liners either but all of my kids plates smelled and tasted like soap.

They also have some ceramic dishes that have silicone sleeve on them to protect them!

@Alyssa I use it at least 3 times a week for 3-4 years and have never noticed this. I cycle through my sons bowls and I have 3 of them so I use them about the same amount. I tried looking it up and the only thing I can figure is it's because I hand wash it which is less strong detergent.

@Kate Oh yeah probably. I should have said that. Idk why I’m just assuming she has a dishwasher. I have heard if you hand wash it doesn’t happen- or as bad or as quickly! I’m guessing it has something to do with the heat maybe? Not sure.

Okay so we had silicone plates and bowls and they definitely took on a soapy flavour after putting them in the dishwasher. I would avoid the dishwasher FOR SURE if you buy them... we switched to bamboo. Pricey but worth it imo

We never had any issues with ours! Hand washed only & never noticed them taking on a soapy smell/ flavor

We used silicone plates and I always had a sensitivity to dishwasher smell so I always hand washed them. They still got that horrible soapy smell and taste though. But they were okay for about 8-9months and then I just switched to our normal ceramic plates. If our daughter was prone to throwing I would have had to do something else though.

If you do silicone I would wash and then bake for a short period (I recently saw a tutorial) to get rid of soapy taste every once in awhile

Could it be the soap that’s being used? We use a low toxic option that hasn’t caused this same issue - yet
