Honey intake??!

My baby is 11 months old and iv accidentally been giving her honey roasted turkey the past week. I didn’t even think to look at the specific name and just grabbed turkey for us to eat. She’s ate it multiple times this past week and I’m worried because I know doctors stress not to give honey before age 1. Has anyone else given honey to their babies before one?

I did on accident when it came with an oatmeal that had every allergen. She’s doing great. I think straight honey is more dangerous for them.

The reason they shouldn't have honey is because of a bacteria in it that can make them ill but the turkey will have been cooked with honey on it which would kill the bacteria. Between that and the very small amount then it shouldn't be a problem, in my opinion

For the very small amount you're talking about it's likely fine. You would know if it caused a problem. The reason honey is advised to be avoided before 1 is because of Clostridium botulinum, the microbe that causes botulism. Adults can get botulism, but ours is different from infant botulism; we have defenses against the bacteria, infants don't. That said, cases of infant botulism are rare these days. If your kiddo was sick they would show symptoms: difficulty feeding and swallowing, unusual lethargy, difficulty eye tracking, poor head control, muscle weakness. Don't worry about it, it's an honest mistake, just keep it in mind for the future. 💜

If it’s cooked it’s not bad! And she’s nearly one too, I wouldn’t worry! Mine used to have a mango honey chicken stir fry I made and because it’s cooked it was okay. Ive just started mixing honey with her Greek yoghurt snd I was panicked about that too but she’s fine! She’s 18 months now I think I became less nervous about 14 months xx

Children cannot have Raw honey. My daughter eats honey cheese curls and she have some food with honey in it and she is fine. BUT STAY AWAY FROM RAW HONEY.

@Hazel this isn’t true. cooking things with honey does not make them safe to eat under 1 year old.

@Clare this isn’t true at all… raw honey is the best kind of honey and the most healthy.. you’re thinking of raw milk. it’s very very dangerous for any baby to have any form of honey before they’re a year old. after that, honey is actually the healthiest sweetener that we can use and absolutely is great for kids especially when sick

It is fine. Honey is not considered safe because it may contain harmful bacteria. Cooking does destroy bacteria and nitrites also inhibit the same bacteria. There is a high chance the turkey had nitrites in it. Source: USDA although at this point we know we have to take like a pinch of salt any information coming from the US... 😆

Thank you everyone that makes me feel so much better! She hasn’t shown any signs of what was mentioned so I think she will be ok
