Ice cream

Can I give my 6 month old a bite of ice cream? He's never had anything sweet and I just want to see his reaction.

I did it and mine both made it so far lol

The only concern there is that the amount of sugar in it, I did not introduce any ice cream to my children until they were at least 18 months old. The recommended kind should also be gelato as that’s guaranteed to be made from pasteurised milk, never do the ones from ice cream vans though as those are just cream being churned times and times again - midwife actually even advised against it for pregnant women too. And baby stomach can only process so much sugar, their stomach is also tiny, so the amount of sugar is not good for them at 6 months, they can enjoy it later and will probably do for the rest of their life, you can certainly wait a little while longer. You can make fruity ice pops, being fruits and yoghurt mixed if you want them to have “desserts” - they don’t even understand the difference in “main” and “desserts” at this point. Not sure why some parents are in such a hurry to get them to eat like we do. Ice cream is definitely not recommended as one of the first food.

I don’t think they’re supposed to have most cow milk products before 1 year because their kidneys can’t handle the protein, minerals, sodium, etc. Could be wrong tho

@Nattinan thank you so much for your response, super informative!

His daddy vetoed the idea but after reading all the responses I don't mind waiting longer now lol

Given both my boys a taste of everything in small amounts. They're still alive with no problems. Second son willing to try everything we eat. First son we have to push to try different foods.

I started taste testing at 6 months with both my daughters lol they are fine . It’s up to you , some doctors say wait until 1 some doctors say you can start at 6 months . I always started at 6 months .

i gave my baby a lick of my ice cream cone at 4 months🤣 he’s fine. he’s 5 1/2 months now and whatever i eat, he wants to try.

It is fine, until it isn’t. Ice cream is not an essential food, and Victoria is also right. Cow milk is not recommended before age of 1 year old either. I live in the UK and that’s what I’ve been told. Babies will show sign of interest because that is how they are made, they are meant to be curious, but it is our job to introduce things to them when they’re appropriate. All food should be bland and unseasoned before they turn 1, at least. They won’t know what “delicious” is yet. There are plenty of veg and fruit that are naturally sweet, you can always introduce those instead for “sweet” taste.

A tiny taste of ice cream wont do any harm, my son had ice cream around 8 months old and it caused no harm 🤣also my son was also having milk before the age of one 1 so the advice above about them not "being allowed" milk before 1 isn't true. They shouldn't have cows milk as a main drink, but they can have it mixed in food from 6 months

You can make 'ice cream' by blending a frozen banana (peel it before freezing, I made that mistake and it was impossible to peel frozen 😂) and add a splash of their milk to loosen it if needed. I did that for my LG, it was messy but she loved it. Food doesn't need to be bland and unseasoned under 1 at all! My LG loves a little curry rice and cinnamon in her porridge. Just no honey or added salt or sugar, most other seasonings are fine.

@Lauren Just because you do things like that doesn’t make my statement any less true. I follow advice I got from my midwife and health visitors, who actually do regular health reviews of our babies here in the UK. Again, it is fine until it isn’t. It’s the same thing again with people who would defend giving water to babies under 6 months old. Not all babies have the same level of food tolerance, and/or lucky. Do it at your own risks, and it’s not a competition either.

I’d wait for a year but up to you ultimately xx

@Nattinan I'm in the UK as well, and that's the advice I got from my HV and off the nhs website like posted above. I followed all the guidance that I was given, which was to introduce cows milk in food at 6 months. I was stating my experience, and ultimately, you're just disputing everything anyone says that's against your opinion. You argue that it's fine until it's not but you can say that about anything when it comes to weaning, my child could be allergic to something and i wouldnt know until I introduced it. If the OP wants to give her child a wee bit of ice cream to try, then that's up to her and safe to do so. She's not asking if she should can give them ice cream for every meal.

My youngest was 5 months when her 4 year old sister showed her ice cream cone in her face. She is fine.

@Carys lol that highlighted part says “no added sugar”

You can but it's of no benefit to him! More to benefit you so you can see his reaction 🤷‍♀️

@Victoria~ and I wasn't referring to the added sugar bit and said 'no honey added salt or sugar' (if you actually read what I put). I was referring to Nattinan saying babies under 1 can't have anything with cows milk 🙄
