NYC Shelter

I’ve been in a NYC shelter since 12/29 and it’s a family shelter. Which means there are a pregnant women , women and children , & some couples with children.. Since 01/13 I’ve been smelling cigarette smoke coming from my bathroom vent and I have been complaining about it since. The only reason why I’ve been complaining about it is because it wakes me up out of my sleep. I’m in a phase of my pregnancy where I’m NOT sleeping. So when I finally fall asleep , I’m waking up and I’m coughing my lungs up. I’ve been particularly complaining about it this week and staff does nothing ? Administration does NOTHING! I’m confused because is this a smoke free facility? They know which unit it’s coming from. I feel like I’m being ignored. I called 311 three days ago to report the shelter since I’m not getting help here. Idk what else to do.

Beggers can’t be choosers. You got a place to lay your head. Whatever issues you go thru are just coming with your struggle at the moment. get some sleep.

@BREE I see what you’re saying. But, if it’s going to risk the health of my self and my unborn child , I’m not taking it. As I mentioned it’s a family shelter with pregnant women and children. Tobacco smoke does so much harm in the second hand.

See if you can be given a different room? You shouldn’t have to put you and your baby at risk of second hand smoke

Maybe they can move you to another unit?

@BREE she can’t sleep that’s the problem lol. She has rights still even though she is in a shelter.

@BREE biish is u cool? U don’t know her story….theres no need to be rude… i hope this type of struggle reaches you one day 🩵

@Mariah no need for name calling ugly I’m telling her like it is. I had to stay at other ppls houses before and struggled too. you can’t complain appreciate what you got given the circumstances

@Jisely I spoke with the site administrator and 3 days ago she told me I’d be moved. I’m still having to suffer through the smell. And the fact that it’s STILL happening makes me feel like they aren’t even addressing the problem with the person smoking. They are just allowing it.

Keep on top of them, and continue to reach out to the top till you get answers or moved. Stay strong, this will be a small bump in your road to motherhood, I hope and pray you find resolution soon.
