Dog People: please help😭😭😭

Y'all, I am TORN. I've been contacted about two incredible dogs and I can't decide which is the best fit. I'm looking for something that will be gentle like an ESA, but also protective over the home. I am a survivor of DV. Dog 1: seven month old male. The owner is guessing husky/GS mix, but doesn't seem sure. Has approximately 20 obedience trainings already. Seems perfect. Dog 2: 1 year old black GS mix, unsure of the other breed. Approximately 55 lbs right now. Was raised and trained by a vet tech. Also appears perfect 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Y'all, I DON'T KNOW. They both seem great, well trained, I can't make a decision. Please provide insight if you know about dogs 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 thank you in advance

Are you able to meet them before you decide? If so, that would make it a lot easier to determine which is the best fit for you. I've never owned a Husky, but I've heard they can be very stubborn sometimes. They also are very vocal. German Shepherds aren't as vocal and aren't typically as stubborn. Obviously those are stereotypes and the first is a mix, so it may not apply. Have either of them been around kids at all? Are there other factors you need to consider for which do you get like other pets or anything?

Truly I’d agree that meeting them in person is the only sure fire way to know who the best fit is for you! A seven month old is still very much a puppy, and one who’s on the cusp of adolescence at that, where as a one year old pup is already in the adolescence phase, which does present itself with some challenges but you’d encounter those eventually with a 7 month old too. On another note, just cause they’ve got recognition of commands coming from someone else doesn’t mean every single one will transfer perfectly to you attempting to get the same results! Because bond & skills don’t transfer through a leash, it’s built through fostering relationships full of trust (:

Unfortunately, they're both too far away to meet both of them...I kind of have to make a decision 🥺

Gotchaaaa well are you feeling called towards one more than the other?

@Parker 又 yes but they are both so perfect 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

@Jessica I agree with Parker about transfer of commands potentially being an issue. I trained my dog myself. He struggles to listen to anyone other than me unless he knows they have a treat for him because he is food motivated, which brings up another good thing to think about. What are both dogs motivated by as far as training goes? One maybe more food motivated or toy motivated than the other. It could be good to know what both are willing to work for most. Do the people who have these two dogs have some sort of policy for if they don't work out for your family? Reputable breeders and trainers tend to take dogs back from adopters if the dog doesn't work for a particular family. You say they both seem perfect, but does one stand out a bit over the other?

Can you ask them to demonstrate any bite play they’ve done with them? See if they have good control over “out” or a release word (to stop biting). If they’ve done that I’d say go with that one 😉 also the one that is more socialised is best too - Dog Trainer and DV survivor, I love protection dogs

@Rochelle those are good questions if they plan to commit to training a full protection dog, I did mean to ask if they planned to do so, or if they were just hoping their presence would aid as a natural deterrent to possible assailants. Like yanno looking like a big dog & letting out some barks when people get too close, cause those would be very different situations!
