Mine just uses the spoon as a food flicker. I do the same as you - either feed “liquidy” foods or preload for him to feed himself. He definitely doesn’t use cutlery to eat!
Mine doesn’t really try to eat off the plate, only if I put stuff on the tray sometimes, he always waits till I feed him, if he grabs a spoon of me then he just plays with it rather than trying to use the spoon to feed himself, every baby is different and some babies do it and some babies don’t. I stopped stressing and going “by the book”, we all grew up fine and can use cutlery and I never tend to ask my mum “when did I start eating with a spoon/fork”. But my son does feed himself snacks if I put it into his hand and puts it to his mouth and eats
The girl looking after him was young, (looked young enough that she wouldn’t have kids) and it was also her manager speaking to me about it, who was an older woman maybe 50s. Because they mentioned this, I’m thinking do the other babies there eat with spoons themselves. Today’s lunch at nursery is spaghetti bolognese, which if we have at home he will just lift fistfuls of it and shove into his mouth. He definitely will not be picking up a fork to eat this lol. So I will see if they speak to me about this later when picking him up. I also just can’t believe they puréed his lunch yesterday lol
My almost 13 month old has just started using a spoon fairly well in the last few weeks. Most of the time she picks up a fistful of food and tries to cram as much of it in her mouth as possible 😂 I definitely wouldn't be expecting a young 1 year old to eat well with a spoon. That's very odd from the nursery.
Mine can put the spoon in his mouth pretty well if it’s pre loaded but can’t use it independently. Everything else he just picks up with his hands but he’ll even pick up mushy things like weetabix sometimes rather than using his spoon
He does mixture of all - sometimes spoon ( I put the food on) or hands or sometimes I spoon feed him if he lets me x
Mine is exactly the same as yours, and would also try to pick the puree up with her hands too! She'd be really upset with pureed food, as she loves grabbing the food and feeding herself. I also spoon-feed porridge for the same reason, and other things like yoghurt. But try to make sure at least one meal a day, normally two, she can do it herself as that's what she prefers. If I give her a spoon (pre loaded), she often tries to flick it / wave it around / stick her fingers on it to pick the food up.
With a huge amount of concentration my LO can dip her spoon into her porridge and get some into her mouth. Then she claps at herself and accidentally throws the spoon across the room. We get maybe 3 or 4 goes then I end up feeding her the rest. Most other foods she picks up. Chilli & rice, spaghetti bolognese and veg for example she eats with her hands
My lo will pick up a loaded spoon and fork (just introduced the fork in the last couple of weeks) but if I’m not quick enough she will grab food with her hands if she’s hungry. I don’t dare do anything too liquidy as I’m sure she’d play with it like water 😂 she’s tried to put a piece of fish on her fork with her hand, she knows it goes on there but not how to get it on there bless her. So please don’t worry! Not sure what they’re on about!
My daughter eats exactly the same way as your son!! I would be confused if they pureed her food because there is no need to do that. At their age they wouldn’t be eating with a spoon properly they are only one!! Are the people concerned with this either older so arent familiar with BLW or dont have children? They dont seem to be updated😬
