I know my LO gets given a spoon to try feeding herself and play with at mealtimes at nursery, but then the staff also feed them so food actually goes in 😄. Pretty sure she uses her hands to feed herself in between bites the staff give her. At home she can use a fork if it’s something we can stab onto the end and then hand her to put in her mouth. We had to fill out a weaning form before she started about what texture food she eats and if she can feed herself along with the allergens form.
My little one started nursery in September and is now able to feed herself with a spoon. The nursery fed her to start with and then encouraged her to feed herself. Sometime the still help her. If she hadn't been at nursery she would not be able to use cutlery yet as I didn't encourage it (the mess stresses me out so much). Now at home I start off by feeding her and then she steals the spoon to feed herself until she can't be bothered anymore and then I help again
We filled in the weaning form too and also mentioned to staff she can only do finger food. To be fair, staff have been trying to feed her but she refuses to be fed! I’ll maybe encourage her to use a spoon at home also. (Think I need to mentally prepare for the mess!!) Thanks ladies. X
Oh my girls only just getting to it now ! Ahaha. A lot of mess but I’ve just been giving her the spoon after her meal to play with it, then introduced it with a bit of food on her tray, she starts to work it out and she’s doing alright. But I was also told this is a silly thing to worry about and at their age especially not to worry. Cutlery is literally made for social situations, she always eats so well out so I’m not going to be upset that she doesn’t use them yet.
Don’t the staff help the LOs to eat if they can’t eat themselves with cutlery? They do at our nursery - they will let them try and if they can’t/don’t they spoon feed them
