Weaning

My baby will be 6 months on 10th March but he can't sit up on his own at all. We were planning on starting weaning with purees only to begin with but do I need to give him longer until he can sit up fully on his own? He can sit up pretty well in his highchair but obviously his back is fully supported. I just have such fears about choking, to be honest I'm reluctant to start weaning.

I’m in the same boat. Little girl will be 6months on the 9th March and is not sitting unsupported yet. I think I’m gonna wait until she can. Hopefully will only be a few more weeks

My little girl will be 6months on 8th March, she also can’t sit unaided yet so I think we will wait until she can, x

If they can sit supported by a chair, that’s considered unaided - that’s what I understood? X

I was worried about this and spent the past week doing some practise, I have been really pleasantly surprised by the progress in just a few days! LO is 6 months on the 11th

Yeah mine can’t sit up if I just place him on the floor but I put up his high chair last week to get him used to it and he sits in that completely fine with full use of both hands, legs and feet at 90 degrees unless he’s leaning forward reaching for stuff. I’ve been giving him teethers in there and his breast milk ice pop thing and he sits and brings it to his mouth no bother so yesterday I tried first day of weaning, giving him a puree and a finger food on his plate and today as well he had steak and a carrot puree and he’s fed himself as well as let me give him bits on a spoon and been absolutely fine and loving it! So I would try yours in the high chair and see how they sit there rather than waiting til they can properly sit on their own just on the floor. But that’s just me :) speak to dr if you’re wanting reassurance xx

Yep I've started weaning just on Sunday and my LO can't sit up unaided on the floor but can sit up fine in his highchair.

Thanks ladies, this is all really helpful. He does sit up straight when he's in his highchair, not slumped or anything. I have a suction toy i put in there and he hits and grabs at it really well. I think I'll see how we go over the next couple of weeks, I'm not in a rush to start it exactly when he turns 6 months but I actually do feel he would be okay with soft purees as he takes his teething powders well from a spoon and is always very interested in food when we are eating.

The main thing is your baby can sit up straight in their high chair and not be slumped over, as this restricts their throat. Xx
