Moving to SFO with a toddler

Hello Mamas, My husband got a new job offer in SFO. We live in Nashville,TN. Can someone plz tell me what area would be best for affordable rent apartments that are toddler/kid friendly? Feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

Hi! SF mom here - what do you define as affordable? How far is your husband willing to commute?

Honestly, a lot of the new build apartments by corporate landlords are kid-friendly. Sound doesn’t really travel because the insulation, etc. is up to code. If your husband is working on site at SFO, you could start your search at Millbrae, Foster City and the surrounding area. Burlingame will be pricy.

I think his office would be at Mission Bay. He's ok with traveling. I just want a safe and not-too-expensive kinda 2B+B apartment. Seems like so many neighborhoods and I'm not sure where to start looking!

Hi! My toddler and I live in the sunset and we love it! Lots of kids, and close proximity to Golden Gate Park, Academy Of Science, tons of restaurants, and the beach! I found it to be more affordable than other areas, especially for what you get (square footage, parking, laundry, etc). The Richmond area is nice too!

Inbox me I can send you some info

Just fyi, “affordable” here vs. TN is a huge difference. Just be prepared for sticker shock! We moved here 5 years ago and I’m originally from Missouri, and oh boy, I had to change my entire frame of reference for what things cost. To be transparent - we currently pay a little under $4k/month to rent a 3 bd/2ba house with no parking, no laundry or even hookups, no yard (we do have a balcony). We are in the sunset in SF, about 10 miles from SFO. Very toddler friendly except for the thick weed smell everywhere, lol. My girl is almost 4 and loves exploring Golden Gate Park, ocean beach, ballet class at Tutu School, and we’re about to start preschool at a place we love within walking distance. It’s not a bad place to live but be prepared to feel like everything is SUPER expensive because of what you’re used to!

Do you want to be in S.F. proper or the suburbs?

Again, an approximate budget would definitely help. For a 2 BD, you’d probably be looking at $3.5-$4kish in most of the city. You’ll save quite a bit if you go slightly south of the city (South San Francisco or Daly City) or looking East Bay!
