Weaning

I've been giving purées so far but now I want to give finger food but I'm nervous. What foods have you guys used first? (Yes I have solid starts already) x

Don't be nervous. Whatever you choose to serve make sure it passes the squish test, ie you can squish the food between your thumb and index finger easily. It's also normal for baby to gag. Gagging and choking are very different. If they are are coughing and making noise this is gagging. Encourage baby and reassure them. Choking is silent. Solid start app has a free food database for weaning. I personally did a course ,but you can get books from the library for lots of ideas. You can try lumpy texture rather than puree as well as finger foods. Key being they are the size of your finger. We started with sweet potato 2 ways Cut into sliced and baked and also mashed up. I have both to baby.

@Lucy thankyou x

I started with banana, steamed carrot and avocado. This week she’s had mango, steamed parsnip, apple, butternut squash and sweet potato. For the card fruit and veg I offer steamed sticks and a puree version on the side with some breast milk in it xx

Agree with the above comments and another way to give things to help them practice chewing and holding finger foods without having to worry about choking is to do like a mango pit, steak bone, or similar with just a tiny bit left on it. You can stick a little baby sock on it so they can hold it! Other hits for us has been avocado slices rolled in ground flax seed, toast with thinly spread peanut butter, & soft almost overripe strawberries

@Beth @Allie thanks girls xx

We offer almost anything we’re having, just prepared in a suitable way. Firm favourites are broccoli and sweet potato, we done steak, banana, toast, carrots, bell pepper, pasta, avocado, strawberry
