Protein shakes

Does anyone here give their toddler protein shakes? My boys diet is terrible, he's horrendously picky and barely eats anything. He won't touch meat at all, the only dairy I can get in him is greek yogurt. Fruit is now becoming a task and he'll only have it in puree form 😩 and obviously veggies are a big no no. He currently lives off, toast, bagels, crumpets, pancakes, brioche, with either jam or honey, porridge and Weetabix. Crisps, biscuits, kiddy snacks like oaty bars, raisins, pressed fruit bars, these are all the snacks he has and I try and steer towards the healthier ones. It's really difficult to get any kind of goodness in! So my question is, can I give him protein shakes? 😂 I'm going to start giving him the high protein yogurts you can get from supermarkets and the same with the high protein porridge... Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to give him paediasure shakes because it's just way too expensive 😬 Any advice would be appreciated because trying to get a GP appointment is like gold dust - but also I want to try and tackle this at home before getting doctors involved. Thankyou ❤️❤️

I personally wouldn’t give protein shakes or other supplements, as they may not provide all of the nutrients that toddlers need in the right proportions. I would look more into the fussy eating side of things maybe contact a health visitor rather than doctor they do a text message service. I’d gradually keep introducing new foods with (safe food on his plate too) for example toast as you usually would but with meat on the side, fruit, veg etc Just too add your sons diet doesn’t sound too horrendous I’ve defo heard of worse xxx

I read once that those carbs have more protein in than you realise, and offer more of what a toddler needs than you think. I'll see if I can get the link/article

I wouldn’t be adding anything into his diet that’s not actual food, or he might limit what he eats knowing he’s got a nice shake at the end of the day or as an option. Speak with your health visitor for advice on getting more foods types in him and see. Those shakes are for adults, so won’t have the right levels of anything in for a toddler and often full of sugars. Shakes recommended by paediatricians are different and medically needed for weight gain etc

Also just to add my little boy likes making stuff like recipes in kids magazines etc maybe a kids cookbook? Sometimes I serve veg in the middles of the table and he loves getting his own a bit of independence xx Also I never make food a battle I don’t say stuff like if you don’t eat this you won’t get pudding etc. my son has sometimes had pudding and dinner at the same time there’s never been pressure for him. Xx

Thanks for all your advice ladies. I've tried a lot of things with him, like getting him to help make the meal, letting him serve himself, putting a new food on a plate with his safe food. I've been strict, I've been nonchalant, I've tried letting him go to bed hungry, letting him eat what he wants - literally everything. I've ran out of ideas but I think I'll try again with letting him help etc and see where we go from there. I think I will contact the HV too just to see if she has any ideas of what to try. But thankyou for all your advice and ideas ❤️❤️xx

Good luck with it all 💖

My little boy is a fussy eater as well. When I do protein shake for myself, he always asked to try, and now I do little cup for him. I give him smoothie as snak and still offering other meal. Also, my smoothie is a big hand of spinach, some fruit avocado yoghurt, protin powder, and milk or water. He doesn't have that every day, but the day when his eating is very bad, it works. Good luck.

First of all let me say you’re doing great, it’s difficult I know! But you’re son is eating a lot more than mine does my son is stuck on yogurts crisps biscuits jelly’s and some just some fruit. I spoke to my health visitor multiple times, about my toddlers eating and I’ve tried everything but she doesn’t think it’s an issue. What you need is a peadiatriction appt but waiting list is very long. It’s actually the speech therapist that I spoke to that was willing to listen to my issues as my son has aversion to textures and is a picky eater but I’m currently waiting on her to send me the info on help about dealing with this. Yes I give my son some protein items but never the full servings as it is a lot for a toddler but it helps to make sure he is having some form of protein in his diet as he has none yes I know many here may look down on me but apples and yogurts and cereal isn’t enough.

I give my son protein puddings half of one, no more than twice a week as a full one is too much in one serving for his little body. Another option is a protein yogurt which I mix about a tablespoon into another yogurt like a munch bunch or a corner miller yogurt. These are only two ways I give my son protein but also bear in mind it is more filling than your normal yogurt of course because of the protein. Like I said I’ve tried many methods to try get my son to eat and pick up other foods but most worked temporarily or not at all But in my experience using the protein puddings and yogurts have done no harm to my son whatsoever. But also I suggest talking to your hv or getting a pediatrician appt to get better support and ideas maybe yours will be more helpful than what mine were as mine didn’t help at all. And just said keep going.
