Help/advice

I have been feeling very unwell I’m 36 weeks pregnant. My hands and feet are swollen, I have the biggest headache and it won’t. Go away. I have Protien in my urine. But triage keep sending me home because my blood pressure if normal and it’s not high… I feel something is wrong but no one will listen to me :((

That defo sounds like pre eclampsia but with your blood pressure being normal I’m not sure. I hope it’s nothing too serious and you feel better soon x

Looking at the NHS site pre-eclampsia is when high blood pressure and protein in your urine are present at the same time. But it does also say as the condition progresses it can cause severe headaches, vision problems, sudden swelling of hands, feet and face etc so if it doesn’t feel right to you I think just be persistent with triage. I don’t know if it’s recommended or ideal for you incase it makes you anxious but do you have a blood pressure monitor at home so you can keep an eye on it yourself? Obviously I’m no doctor but it could give you peace of mind to monitor it maybe? I have had protein in my urine at pretty much every midwife app I’ve had and it comes back normal they just tell me it can be due to discharge. Try not to worry yourself but also you know your body better than anyone else x

This is exactly how I felt the majority of my first pregnancy but I had high blood pressure and no protein in my urine. Wasn’t diagnosed until the day I went into labour and it was really bad for my baby. Ask for a second opinion and to see a consultant they have to let you and basically just start a harassment campaign until someone listens. Go into triage every day if you have to!!

Keep going, keep ringing, keep asking to speak to members of staff for a second opinion if you don’t feel like you’re getting answers that you need. I would also make the point that not everyone has “text book” signs of conditions etc and we all present differently/ we are all individuals so can they look further into it. Hopefully it’s nothing but if you feel that it is, keep advocating for yourself x

What are your protein levels at? Have they given you blood tests to check liver and kidney function? I know someone who had preeclampsia without high blood pressure so it’s definitely possible

My Protien levels were 18 and they said that was normal. I keep ringing them and I go in wait for hours and then they just send me home… they make me feel so stupid xx

@Courtney I wouldn’t be too worried about the protein at the moment. I’m high risk for preeclampsia with high blood pressure and have had trace a couple of times which they haven’t been worried about and my blood tests have come back clear. It’s definitely something to keep an eye on though as may suddenly increase. Do you have access to a BP monitor so you can keep an eye on that yourself incase it starts going up?

Feeling unwell - any other symptoms? Swollen and headache flags for me, although it could be normal pregnancy stuff as well.

Did you have low bp before pregnancy? Go back and ask for preeclampsia blood tests

When I had pre expampsia with my first I had the exact same symptoms as you without high blood pressure- it was infact pre eclampsia just don’t let them send you away xx
