How to know when to start veg puree for baby?

My LO is 4.5 months now. She stares at mouths when we eat around her and she stares at food now. She hasn't cut any teeth as yet although she is teething. How do I know when to start giving her vegetable purees?

6 months. Google "signs of readiness to start solids"

Wait until she’s at least 6 months and showing the signs of readiness. Watching you eat isn’t one of them

Another sign is that they have lost the tongue thrust reflex. Find another list.

That was one of our first signs too, but my son literally went to try to “eat” anything I put to my mouth - coffee, sandwiches, anything 🤣 he was about 5 months when we started weaning him, after speaking to the HV, who encouraged it also. His first puree meal was just boiled pumpkin mashed down with some breast milk and he loved it. You do what’s best for your baby 😊❤️

My second showed this at this age too but didn’t grab food until five months and she is almost six months old I have given some food but not rushing into it until definitely after six months. My oldest was like this at this age too but she was more keen after six months. Don’t rush into it definitely wait until six months

I’m in the UK so would follow nhs guidance, that doesn’t look like nhs advice

NHS advises the 3 signs of readiness. 1. Can they sit with minimal support by themselves. 2. Do they have good head control (aka they can keep their head up without it falling forwards) 3. They've lost the tongue thrust. All 3 tend to occur around 6 months. Showing an interest in food is not a sign of readiness. My daughter was laughing at us eating at 4 months old she found eating hillerious. At 6 and a half months old we started solids (she was sick at 6 months and I didn't want her first taste of food to be affected by a cold). She loved it! Could feed herself straight away with a spoon because she had seen us doing it for so long.

I would talk to a paediatrician first if you intend to start earlier than 6 months. We started with my son at 5 months because he wasn't satisfied with formula anymore, he would just want to eat constantly. So our paediatrician suggested veg purees and it worked great. Also I would start with 1 single vegetable purees, and introduce a new one every 3-4 days to make sure you know if something causes bad stomach or allergies

Check out this reel from SolidStarts on Instagram. It shows what readiness does and doesn't look like. Interest in food is only 1 piece of the readiness puzzle https://www.instagram.com/reel/CctYihwFmAP/?igsh=d2s0bDNmc3Y1ZTI=

We started purées at 4 months old. He was sitting up, interested in food etc and had a massive appetite

It’s 6 months. They need to sit unaided, lost the tongue reflex and have good head control. Babies guts are very sensitive.

Our 4.5 month old has started - we started her on baby porridge which is from 4 months - I'd try something like that to start with xx

Please get advice from a professional not just someone on an app whose baby was fine with it. All baby’s are different and have different abilities and different times. No one on here can definitively tell you when your baby is able to start purées. A GP, Health Visitor, Paediatrician, etc can safely advise you on the correct steps to take. A lot of purées will say “4+ months” or “from 4 months” but that doesn’t mean they should be given to every baby at 4 months. It’s usually alongside medical guidance.
