Tax free is 20 percent off child care so you pay in whatever amount to an account and the government top it up by 20 percent. Free child care is the hours the government will pay the childcare provider sk at the moment for my 1 year old it's 15 hours free funding and then I get 20 percent tax free on the rest of the money I need to pay for child care. Hope that makes sense x x

As Jess has explained however be aware the free childcare hours aren’t actually free! Rather funded. There are often top up fees to be paid and if you use them year round it’s 11 or 22 hours a week rather than the full 15 or 30. Lots of nurseries also have rules around when they can be used throughout the day so often if a child goes for the full 10 hours some of those are payable depending on the setting you chose x

It isn’t free childcare it’s funded childcare so in a way it’s free but the government basically pay the nursery for the hours

Tax free I believe is daycare you can write off on your taxes (I could be wrong)

Also be aware that tax free childcare is capped at £2000 per year (£500 per quarter) so it doesn’t necessarily cover 20% depending on how much your childcare costs.
