Just finished watching the news apparently they are keeping the disabilities programming and after school. But this has yet to be accepted by congress and likely to be overturned. As this system has existed since 1979. https://youtu.be/bpq5nRbKEsg?si=Qd2INqkvo4zgOhvA
Just curious @Trish what do expect us to do?
I would also like to add that states can now choose to defund public or private education. And it will lead to further discrimination… overall it’s a shit show and considering our past I just can’t always rely on congress to do the right thing unfortunately…
@Lyss I'm homeschooling but not for this reason
@Terra I homeschool too but it’s cuz we are autistic but now I’m glad we homeschool more cuz when they were in school they needed 504s so now that could be going away… we ain’t going back at least for the next 4, years
@Terra I'd suggest looking into what your local community is organizing, if anything. I also make phone calls a few times a week to my local representatives, and leave voicemails if no one answers. https://5calls.org/ has been a great resource for this. You can also see if your local representative is doing a town hall soon. Mine is a fucking coward and not having any town halls during the March recess, so instead one of the bigger libraries in the area is hosting an "empty chair town hall" where we'll all gather to talk about our concerns and submit them to his office since he won't come in person to hear his constitutes out. There are also opportunities to volunteer virtually to support democratic candidates in some of the upcoming special elections. Yes yes, Dems have issues too, but any additional opposition to the current administration that can be won can go a long way. https://volunteerblue.org/phoning/ These are just a few things I've been doing when I was asking myself "what can I do?"
@Terra email and or call your senators and representatives in Congress include your name and say "I am your constituent and I urge you to protect the department ofi education and it's funding however you can"
It’ll be fine
@Cassie It's a privilege to think that
@Cassie what will be fine?
@Raqi how is it a privilege to think that it will be fine?
This is a great video on ways Mom's can help out and feel more empowered right now. If you are at a loss for how to help start with what is right in front of you in your community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhYWLikAT5Q
Just because you will be “fine” doesn’t mean others will be. The lack of empathy from some moms on this is app is truly disgusting. This is going to effect title I schools the most, ya know, the poor schools where kids are starving .
@Raqi thank you for this information! There are also supposed to be nationwide protests/peaceful demonstrations on Saturday April 5. I know that doesn’t necessarily change anything by attending, but it shows that all Americans are not going to take trump’s shit quietly, and lets our voices be heard!

@Cassie The “It’s fine” mentality is ignorant! Like a frog in a pot of water that slowly starts to boil. Perhaps you voted for the man and so you might think whatever he does is “fine”. But dismantling our government and all of the departments and programs that have been developed over years by the people for the people is not fine!!! This is the department of education. You have a young child. WAKE UP!
And Trish, thank you for posting this. It’s important for us to try to do something, anything!
@Jessica lol I didn’t vote for him. You guys are all going to kill yourself with stress over things you can’t control. Focus on raising your kids right and focus on the moment. Hope you can do that for your young children.
@Lyss what has actually happened that is bad? We don’t even know what’s happening to department of education yet. Just what people hear and they assume the worst
@Cassie "what's so bad about giving schools the ability to discriminate against students based on their needs or identities? They haven't done it YET." You, that's what you sound like
@Cassie well considering we are a red level country now at the same level as the democratic republic of Congo… cuz we are such an unsafe country to go too… like literally the Canadian MP told Canadians to avoid travel to the US if possible. That sounds pretty bad to me. And do you realize that they are trying to make it where disabled kids don’t go to public school cuz it’s to expensive. That is also bad. https://www.cincinnati.com/videos/news/education/2025/03/17/ohio-state-senator-george-lang-faces-backlash-for-remarks/82497678007/
@Cassie I would also like to add that in Florida there is a detention center called Krome. It is currently holding immigrants and green card holders. It typically holds 400 people. It is currently at around 4,000 people detained. They get 1 cup of water a day. It’s suspected that 3 people are dead. This is a literal concentration camp that is killing people. How is it not bad?
@Cassie well if you didn’t vote for him and you don’t agree with his wack ass policies, then you really have no excuse to be so complacent and blasé about all of this! We are not killing ourselves. We are informing and educating ourselves on what is going on in our government, and what all this man and his billionaire buddies are doing to DISMANTLE our government as we know it. He is reportedly working on changing things to “find a way to get re elected for a third term”. No one gets a third term as President! He has literally said he believes he was saved by god (from assassination) to “save our country”. He thinks whatever he says should be good enough for him to do whatever he wants, and that the judicial branch of government should have no say over his word. He thinks he has unchecked power over the other branches of government. This man is unhinged. He is a literal threat to democracy and to our country as we know it. You can’t just sit around and say “it will probably be fine.”🙄
@Jessica all you’re talking about is what the media is telling you. The media isn’t always right. Nothing has happened. It’s fear mongering and you’re feeding into it
@Cassie I mean, this plan was outlined in Project 2025. You can look at that directly to see their goals from this, no media necessary https://www.project2025.observer/
@Raqi they are not getting rid of the department of education. They are reorganizing it to different departments. Everyone is freaking out that it’s going away completely because again, fear mongering and thinking the worst. I’m not saying don’t fight for what you think is right but some people literally vomit from stress because of it. Be calm and do what you think you need to do to better your life
@Cassie k
@Cassie you say fear mongering but we used to have rights to our bodies. But now we don’t have roe v wade. This isn’t fear mongering. This is what’s happening.
@Lyss yes that is the one thing that has happened and is unfortunate. Not everywhere though and hopefully it can stay that way. I’m more talking about the topic of this post. Have a great day ladies! Hopefully you can enjoy the day with your kids and teach them to live in the moment 💛
@Cassie I listen to meet the press. They speak directly to both parties, members of Congress, political experts, and Trump himself. What I stated above is directly from the horse’s mouth so to speak. I’m not quoting “fear mongering” from media. I’m educating myself and forming my own opinion. How do you get informed politically?

@Jessica your post is literally things trump says lol. Which may not be things he does just stuff he spews out of his mouth. He’s not eliminating the department of education like the original post says. They are reorganizing it to different departments. Just focus on what is real and not your extreme hate for the man. I hope y’all aren’t spreading this to your young toddlers. I know he has said and done horrible things. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be standing up for what you believe in and fighting. The world is just full of so much hate and y’all are adding to it. Just focus on what’s actually happening. Not just what he said or what you heard. I’m sure half the stuff he says won’t go anywhere. Who knows though. Peace and love have a great day
@Cassie how about we try and hold your hand and help you connect the dots here. As part of the reorganization to different departments, the Trump administration is dissolving the federal department of education. Which means, yes, they're getting rid of it. Does that help? If anyone deserves to be "hated" it's a tyrant Nazi enabler and sycophant like him. If people like the ones who are concerned here don't stand up to his fascist take over of the government, there won't be anyone to speak out when they inevitably come for people like you.
@Raqi the services ran by the department of education will still be ran by other departments. Looking at your profile, seems like you have some anxieties (like all of us). It’s important to focus on yourself first! Have a great day. Again trying to leave the convo
@Cassie I hope you work on yourself too ☺️
If you need to know some of what this means for your school district: -an increase in class sizes as reduction in teaching staff -If your child has any learning disability for which they receive support- ADHD, dyslexia, autism, deafness, speech delays, any kind of IEPneven just help from reading specialists, these services are likely to disappear as they become defunded (more quickly in states labeled darker red). -many schools (again especially those in red marked areas) will be unable to obtain enough school supplies/books/teaching materials -after school programs for students, and teacher development programs are likely to be hit hard or disappear
