Tax free childcare and funded hours

We've lost our tax free childcare and funded hours because my partner isn't working, he was made redundant and hasn't managed to secure work. I am so upset and a bit broken at how much its going to cost with only 1 income. Has anyone been in this position.

Yep. I was made redundant but kept LO in nursery as didn't want to lose his place for when I find a new job. Lost all the funding and it's hard! I think it's awful there isn't anything for this situation.

@Rebecca how are you managing

Incog using savings

I can’t believe they’ve not thought about this! That’s awful. Is there anything that the job centre can do benefits wise to help??

Is there a grace period x

@Sophie you can get JSA and I suppose use that to pay some of the nursery fees.

@Suzanne I called HMRC and they advised the grace period is entirely up to the nursery

@Sophie it is awful because yes the funding is for working parents and in theory if you're at home then you don't need your child in nursery, but that doesn't account for this scenario, which as you say, they've obviously not thought about! I can't take my child out as I need to keep the place and I'd never have the time or opportunity to to look for a new job, complete the applications, go to interviews without him being in nursery for at least some of the time. Such a horrible situation.

Would you be entitled to universal credit? They can pay upto 85% of childcare costs x

@Suzanne sadly the grace period is up😮‍💨

@Rebecca It shouldn’t be legal to make someone redundant when they’ve got a child younger than school age should it. Mad. My partner lost his job when I was pregnant and he suffered so much with depression that it honestly has just completely wrecked our relationship and now our son is going to ultimately suffer as a result. Can’t even imagine how it affects people once baby’s here and childcare has started

@Sophie it’s awful. I’m so sorry to hear that. Our life has been turned upside down by it. It just impacts and puts so much pressure on everything.

@Rebecca feeling this so much. My poor partner is normally our rock but he is stressed and feeling the pressure so much as the main income

Incog I can totally relate. I was the main earner and my partner is self employed so he's been working silly hours, putting himself under extra pressure and stress to make more money
