Early Weening

Does anyone else baby seem bored of drinking milk? My daughter is 13weeks and starts doing 'hungry face' and gets upset when she smells food cooking or sees us eating, like she feels she's missing out, even if she's just finished a feed and was content before. I know you're supposed to introduce solids at 6months but I'm wondering if I should start earlier or if anyone else has. There's baby rice and baby porridge that day from 4months, and I'm wondering, if she gets on okay with those, to start other foods then too?

Can your baby sit up right in a chair on their own unassisted? I know thr answe will be no, all you have to do is some research and looking into the risks of feeding too early, your baby definitely isn't crying because of the smell of food or because you aren't giving her any, give her something safe to chew on instead. Their digestive system isn't even fully ready for solids yet, and you could cause a lot of harm long term.

@Becky hi, I have researched and it does say you can wean earlier if they have a strong neck and can sit up well still with support, both of which she can. It also says about showing interest in our foods which she is. I'm not meaning give her full feeds of food instead of milk or anything, just little tastes of puréed fruit/veg after her milk

You asked for opinions, and i gave you mine it's your baby but its really not safe whstd the harm in waiting I guess

All the antenatal classes and numerous professionals blasted the food that said on the packaging about 4m+. It's monetised and like Becky said above its unsafe and I too wouldn't recommend until LO is able to sit in a chair on their own

You'll also be surprised how small their tummies actually are, and even just giving a small amount will replace their milk intake

Interest in food, being able to sit independently, and also no more tongue reflex (can’t remember the name but it was a new one to me) are all signs of readiness; I wouldn’t look to rush but rather up feeds, or you could take the opportunity to talk her through what’s happening - you might already! - to engage on food without actually feeding. It might just be general nosiness and wanting to know what’s happening rather than specifically about food? X

Please don’t start yet 😩 I work in health visiting. I run weaning classes and I honestly wouldn’t advise it yet. Despite any outward signs of readiness you may be seeing, I guarantee you her tummy is not mature enough yet. Her body will naturally respond to sounds, sights and smells with interest like salivating or watching you eat, but I can promise you she isn’t ready.its absolutely your decision but I would encourage you to go to your local weaning group if you have them running at your nearest family hub. It’s important to have the correct information before making any decisions. Milk is absolutely all a baby needs nutritionally until they are 6 months of age and my personal advice would be to wait until as close to this point as you can

Thank you for the advice ladies, I'll hold off till 6months

I started my first baby on solids at 4 months but he wasn’t gaining weight and was suggested by the doctor. However this baby is very healthy and putting on weight correctly so will be holding out until 6 months (she’s also showing signs) unless they are not putting weight on and a doctor recommends it I’d personally always wait until 6 months x

I’m having the same problem with my 15 week old son, I went and bought some baby rice and have been trying it with him twice a day. Hes still having between 5/6 8oz bottles in a 24 hour period! Good luck, the baby rice helps! X
