Need some advice please

Hi everyone. I have a question about universal credit and childcare cost. How does it work? My baby is starting with a childminder end of April and I have to pay £700 upfront cost first then she said I can declare it back from universal credit. Can they help with the first payment and how long after I declare the cost will I receive it? I’m claiming universal credit as a single mum.

You pay one month and then they pay back up to 85% in your next UC payment

You also need to be working to get the 85% back. They won’t pay if you’re unemployed or looking for work.

Ok thank you. Yes I’m working part time. So no matter what I have to pay the upfront cost myself?

If it’s a new job you’re starting you can request payment upfront under the Flexible Support Fund. They cover your upfront cost and you can also then claim that payment to cover your next month’s payment as if you had paid it yourself and were claiming back as normal. If you’re returning to your old job after maternity leave then you cannot get the Flexible Support Fund and would need to pay the upfront cost yourself
