Baby doesn’t like spoon feeding themself

We did a mix of baby led weaning and spoon feeding from 6 months. He has just turned one. Loves BLW but isn’t doing well with spoon feeding himself at all. I know it takes time but any tips to help as he’s getting 20% of the food in his tummy with the spoon and I end up doing it for him so he doesn’t go hungry. All tips appreciated. Thanks!

When he holds the spoon what does he do with it? Sometimes my baby will reach for the spoon and I’ll give him it and will take the mouthful I put on the spoon. Or if I give him the spoon with nothing on, he will sort of whack the food in bowl with it and put it in his mouth. He just needs to work on the scoop motion. Maybe you could try a fork instead? I’m thinking of doing this myself soon, but I still do a lot of finger food for him to just pick up and eat. It’s usually just his breakfast and occasionally dinner we use a spoon. I honestly think that he will do it on his own time and will learn. But yeah maybe try a fork? Show him how to use it etc and maybe he might get on better with it perhaps?

Have you got a baby spoon? We have one of these and she puts it in upside down quite a lot but is really good now. She can’t use bigger spoons and it dis take lots of practice even with these. We used to feed her at first to make sure she got plenty then let her try for the second half of the food

@Charlie be loves teething on the spoon and biting it or whacking it on his high chair or throwing it around. I help him scoop and try and support him bringing it to his mouth but he is not interested and just wants to play so I leave him to it once I’ve fed him. He absolutely loves his finger food and happily feeds himself. Thank you for the tip, I will try a fork and see how he gets on

@Emma we have a variety of baby spoons but haven’t tried the one above. I will order them now
