Baby-led BLW!

Anyone else’s kid refuse to be spoon fed?! He’ll only eat if he feeds himself (even if it’s the same stuff off the same spoon), but he’s really loving finger foods. It’s taken me a while to figure this out because my first loved to be spoon fed, but this guy is the total opposite! Need tips for dealing with this on the go because honestly spoon feeding from a pouch is much easier in a cafe etc 🙈

Mine is the same, she started out a bit slow but has seriously ramped up and much prefers finger foods just like my first! She also loves a spoon but only if she can feed herself. Have you tried loading it and giving it to him? Otherwise only advice is to batch cook, freeze, and take out defrosted things, or at restaurants just ask for a side of anything fresh (I usually get avocado or cucumber & give that along with bought snacks)

My baby is / was like this. Just finger foods and trying to feed herself with the spoon. The issue is that, as a result, she isnt actually eating much. This was made more acute recently as she has started waking in the night hungry. She is big, and I feel now she really needs the solid food calories. So, for the last few days I’ve been giving her baby rice in the evening (mixed with different fruit or veg purees). Ive been letting her hold the spoon and try and feed herself, but also been sneaking in a spoonful with my spoon when she opens her mouth. I know you aren’t meant to, but it is working. And gradually she is becoming more happy to have me feed her, and open her mouth when I offer the spoon.

When eating out both veggie tots and pin wheels are great. Then i always have a spoon handy to give them tastes of bits from my meal and if there is a blw friendly side il order that for them. For the veggie tots cook and mash your veg of choice, mix with cheese and breadcrumbs shape into tots and bake for 20 minutes. Potato and broccoli or carrot with sweet potato are some of our favourites 😃

@Allie he will bring a loaded spoon to his mouth and manages to get some that way, but it also ends up everywhere 🤪 Ordering sides is a good shout. Time is tight for me but it would be a huge help to batch make and freeze some stuff so I’m not relying on rice cakes and melty sticks 😬

@Hollie yes that is a worry. He just gets so upset when I try to feed him that it can derail the whole mealtime 🤪 Maybe he’ll change his mind when he finds something he really likes. I’ll keep offering but not push too hard. He already wakes several times a night for milk so no changes there. I guess I’ll just have to make sure his weight line is staying consistent 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Kirsty those sound good - my 4yo would probably demolish a lot of those too! Need to plan in some batch cook sessions so I’m better prepared. Currently I’m just trying to cook a bit extra of anything that would make good finger foods to have on hand
