Toddler eats meals at nursery but not at home

My toddler eats all sorts at nursery but at home I can’t even get a fish finger in him. Makes me feel so bad. I have gotten the exact recipes from nursery to see if he’d have it and he won’t at home: he only eats fruit and yogurt ☹️

This is really common! I listened to a podcast of an infant dietician and the reasons she gave which I found interesting were: 1) they have their peers to watch which is a huge driving force for them exploring food. 2) the nursery workers are nowhere near near as invested in them eating it as we are it’s just put on the plate if they eat it great if they don’t then you know they’ve other kids to look after too sort of thing. She advised offering something ‘safe’ alongside new foods and not putting any pressure to eat. No ‘one more bite for mummy’ no ‘if you have a bite of x I’ll give you y’ etc. They like to be in control around this age and food is a big sense of control for them so let them feel like they choose rather than they’re being told what to eat. I’ve started to implement it and I’ve found if I just put the food there and don’t say much he eats more than if we sit and I ‘feed him’ kind of thing, maybe give it a go!

Are you doing all your meals in the highchair? I have a very fussy eater and I found that she’s more likely to try food if I leave it out on a plate that she can come and go from at her leisure. Obviously that doesn’t work for super messy foods, but I guess with the weather improving maybe we’ll start having messy meals in the garden 😅

@Yasmin this all makes sense! Thank you so much. I’m going to give this a try!

@Bridget I think he would like that actually as he’s always trying to climb out of his chair. Sometimes I leave snacks on a plate in the living room like pieces of fruit or crackers and he’s so messy 😂 but he does have a nibble maybe it’s coz I’m more chilled

We are in this phase too and it's not the first time. Trust that it's a phase and will pass! I have to get him out to a park and he eats there or mix up his eating arrangement between high chair, sitting on a chair, sitting on a lap or even walking around if I'm desperate. Feeding soon after he's woken up is entirely a waste of time and I feel like I spend most of my energy and time trying to get him to eat, it's the biggest task by time.

Ohhh same here glad not alone

My son is the same, won’t eat a thing at home but yet will happily eat out! X

My lo is exactly like this. A very fussy eater. Some of my friends’ kids who are the same age just eat absolutely everything including sauerkraut 😅and large portions as well..
