Having a stand off with my work…

Currently 14 weeks and I’ve been having severe dizziness for about 2 months now. It’s so bad that it’s been making it very hard to drive and do other such things without almost passing out. Well, my job has took it upon themselves to say I cannot come back to work until I have a ‘work release’ form from my ob or any other doctor. However, my ob acts like he’s never heard of a ‘work release’ form a day in his life. So either, my ob is playing stupid or it’s my work that’s doing something shady. It’s been 3 weeks now that I’ve been out of work. Not from my own say so, but from what my job says I HAVE to do. Now my job is not even saying when I can return, but they also haven’t fired me. I think they want me to quit, but I’m not just going to let them get away with forcing my hand in quitting. Meanwhile my genius OB says that ‘it’s just a pregnancy thing. You’ll be fine once the baby comes’. So apparently I need a new OB and job! 🤪 🤬

Your employer just wants to make sure you are safe while working. Your doctor should have written you a release statement.

Very normal for a workplace to ask for a medical release if you’ve been having known medical issues. I work in HR and have had many pregnant employees with a plethora of job affecting symptoms. We always require a medical note from them that is with or without restrictions and an end date of those restrictions when they bring up concerns. It’s to make sure that the employee is safe to perform their job for themselves and others. If you are in the United States, they cannot fire you due to pregnancy, it’s illegal. But they can require medical documentation and if you refuse to do that and continue to miss it could be termination worthy. Your doctors playing dumb and needs to provide a release or give you restrictions.

Work release is a pretty common thing if you are having medical symptoms that are affecting work. It’s basically just a paper saying you are safe to be at work and any restrictions you may have
