Dummy

I have a 3 week old little girl. In the night sometimes she gets a little unsettled but not crying so I give her her dummy and she settles back off. Is this ok? Not to feed her when she was just a little unsettled? She’s gone 8 hours between feeds tonight but when she was hungry at 5:30 she cried and wouldn’t have the dummy so I’m assuming she wasn’t hungry when she was unsettled at like 2:30am? Worried this isn’t ok as she’s still only 3 weeks old x

My little boy is always a bit unsettled when he wakes for a feed. I set my alarm for every 4 hours because he won't wake otherwise. I was told that if a baby is crying for food, at that point, they're starving, not just hungry. Them being unsettled is their sign of showing they're ready for a feed. Along with the usual searching and hands to mouth. Obviously, not every child is the same, though.I'm not sure if you're bottled or breast, but it's recommended to wait with a breastfed baby before introducing a dummy x

@Frankie she’s bottle fed breastmilk. I was told by HV I could leave her to sleep as she’s way over birth weight. I’ll see if she wants feed tonight instead of giving dummy x

I would always offer food first. At this age they should be fed at least every 4 hours as their blood sugar levels drops quickly. If they don’t wake up themselves you are supposed to wake them every four hours

I give my almost 2 week old a dummy but only after she has been fed. I think 8 hours is quite a long time for a newborn to go without a feed.

Our little girl just becomes unsettled when she's ready for a feed as opposed to crying so I offer milk and she's never turned it down x
