My princess

I'm starting over at almost 40 because my 23 year old step daughter didn't want to be a mommy. So my husband and I have guardianship of her. This is a new adventure for us as our youngest is 15. She was born 4 weeks early and is just now 8 lbs 5.5 oz. I don't know how to make her gain more weight. I feed her constantly to no avail. The pediatrician isn't saying anything about her weight I just am concerned because she is in the less than 1 percentile for her weight. She was born early due to a growth restriction and was born addicted to nicotine and her mother breastfed her for the 1st two weeks of her life while vaping. Anyone know how I can help her gain weight?

You don't necessarily need them to gain weight quickly. As long as they are following their growth curve you're good. Because they were born early they're a month behind where they should be which is totally normal. If you have a weigh in clinic near you go once a month to check their weight and as long as they follow a curve you're doing well. What you don't want to so is over feed and then that can cause issues later on and they'll start worrying too.

She is adorable đź’ť. Such a sweet baby. Try giving to her every 2 hours formula day and night. At night wake her to give formula at least until she catches up a bit with the centiles.

We aren't over feeding just wasn't sure I'm doing this the right way. Her being little bitty is all new to me. My youngest was a big boy.

I would lean into the fact the the pediatrician seems to think her growth is on track. Some babies are just little! If you are concerned she isn’t getting enough transferred through the bottle you could consult a feeding specialist or lactation consultant who works with bottle feeding. They may have some insight into any mechanical issues that could be present. If her output and weight gain is good, you’re doing the job!
