Tough day

Has anyone had a non verbal child who became verbal? If so.. What did the child say when started talking? Talking fast, slow regular? What was they saying? My son is nonverbal he’s 2. I always wonder what he wants to say to me. He tries to talk so much but he’s not there yet. It pains both of us more so him I think. Also; how can I reason with him during a meltdown? He never wants to leave therapy and won’t give me the time of day to even leave. If I pick him up he will hit me, pull my hair. When I leave him he throws himself on the floor and I mean he is really angry crying about leaving speech therapy. They did mention something like food to bring in. They tried giving him a sticker but he wouldn’t reason with us. These mom moments for me are really hard because he’s 52 lbs he could hurt me by mistake.

My eldest son was only saying about a handful of words at 2, was forming 2 word sentences at almost 3, and is still speech delayed at 8. When kids are in meltdown mode, there is no reasoning with them. That is the point of no return until they calm down on their own. The best thing to do is to find out his meltdown triggers to prevent them. Do the meltdowns happen before you leave him with the therapist for speech and after? Or is it just after? Is he out of the therapist room when he starts to have the meltdown? Pinpoint the exact moment of meltdown and try to find a common pattern. Do you sit in the room with him and the therapist during speech sessions? Maybe there is a certain toy that he likes in the therapist's room that he doesn't want to leave? Maybe he feels overwhelmed after speech and wants something to comfort him? Does he need to have extra prompting to signal the end of speech? If you can, sit in the therapist's room during your son's sessions and observe your son's behavior.
