Weaning

We started weaning just before six months and are over a month and a half into it. My little boy has never let us spoon feed him and will turn his face away and not open his mouth irregardless of whether it’s a food he appears to like. He likes to feed himself which is fine for us, however he still doesn’t seem to be swallowing really anything! I know they said “food before one is all for fun” but I feel like we are almost two months into it and he still isn’t really taking anything! He will hold the food in his mouth at times after managing a bite but then spits it out. It’s very rare he does swallow. Is anyone else going through the same thing? Other mums I speak to (I know you shouldn’t compare but you do!) all say their baby is loving food and managing well 🥹

‘Comparison is the thief of joy.’ HOWEVER I do it all the time still 😂 My son seems to eat next to nothing bless him. I know some must be going in based on his poops but it’s minimal. They’ll all get the hang of it eventually.

You could have been describing our little boy!! He's exactly the same, won't let us feed him, closes his mouth and turns his head! We have to load the spoon with food and he'll feed himself with most of it going all over him of course. He's seems like he could take or leave food, seems like he wouldn't be bothered if we stopped giving him it at all!

My LO is exactly the same and I always stress about her eating. Sometimes she will open her mouth and will let us spoon feed her and she will attempt to eat finger foods. Most of the time will throw food on the floor squish it etc and close her mouth if we offer on a spoon. It’s soo difficult isn’t it. I feel like other babies are eating and why won’t mine but I guess they Will eventually 🤷🏽‍♀️

My little boy is exactly the same, some days he has nothing and other days a few bites but really not a lot! Have gone down the blwnroute as he hates us trying to spoon feed him and when he takes the spoon the food goes everywhere but his mouth! 🤣 I heard someone today describe their baby as a 'mover not an eater' and that's exactly how I would describe my boy!

Do you feed every day? I started weaning 2 months ago too and didnt give her something every day. It would be one thing every few days. We eventually built it up and now I have only started giving her breakfast every morning this last week. Only the last 3 days have I noticed shes starting actually swallowing the food now. Today she shoved a whole raspberry in her mouth and ate the whole thing. I was shocked (let alone scared she’d choke!). I wouldnt worry tbh, they eventually get the hang of it over time. Every bubba is different and they all get the grasp of these things eventually! Just keep at it 🥰 My little girl loves eating when im eating… so much so she wants everything I have! Not sure if youve tried imitating/exaggerating eating and swallowing to show him? x

It’s completely normal, the best thing you can do is keeping showing chewing and really exaggerate chewing and swallowing. We’ve been weaning just over 2 months too and she is now starting to swallow more intentionally. Baby will get there!

Are you offering solids before or straight after milk? If baby isn’t hungry because they’re filled up with milk they won’t be interested in solids. Try offering before milk or an hour after milk and see if there’s any difference x All babies are different and will progress at their own stage x
