I agree with Kelly. Gagging is a good thing as they’re learning. Also a baby’s reflux starts at the top fo their tongue when they’re born and moves back, so it isn’t at the back of their throat yet like ours. So they will gag more easily.
As above, gagging is good!! It’s her way of getting it back out of her mouth. Just be watchful not to try and fish anything out of her mouth unless absolutely necessary as you can actually cause choking that way. My son is gagging slightly less than he was at the start but I’ve found the type of food also helps! I’ve been giving him a few ‘melty sticks’ in the day so he can gauge where to put food so when he has actual food like banana and such, he seems to know what to do a bit more now 😂
No I’m stress head about it too. I spend ages preparing all this stuff and my partner laughs and says “so you can just panic and stop him from eating it”. But everyone above is totally right. It just takes time I think to adjust if you’re a worrier like me !
Yeah it worries me and I did think fishing it out isn’t helping and more of a risk. I just need to remain calm… ☺️ she has the melty sticks and is fine with them but the actual squishy veg was gagging but she enjoyed the mess lol x thanks everyone d
Their gag reflex is really far forward while still young so gagging actually stops them choking while they learn how to take bite size pieces. You putting your fingers in is more likely to cause choking unfortunately. My girl has done a mixture of baby led weaning with occasional purees for around 10 weeks now and has never choked. She’s had over 110 different foods including steak, prawns, rice, baby potatoes, chicken strips etc etc and rarely gags now either. Be brave! You and baby have got this! Just make sure food is prepared correctly (chopped in finger length strips and remove roundness) and you are good to go ☺️
Gagging is good! Gagging helps protect them from choking! I know it’s distressing. Model what she needs to do eg spitting it out rather than fishing it out. I find that helpful. Try and only fish it out if she is really struggling to get it out herself. Look up gagging vs choking and how to tell the difference. Choking is silent and trust me if it does happen you would react so lightening fast. Solid starts has great resources on insta for example. Their gagging gets less sensitive as they grow. Finger foods are great it will help them chew and develop all the right muscles to prevent choking. You got this!!
