Iron tablets

Got a call from the midwife yesterday who let me know I have low iron and I’ve now been prescribed iron tablets. I took my first one last night and within a minute was immediately sick. I’m a bit of faf with tablets at the best of times but straight after putting this one in my mouth I felt like I immediately could taste blood and just could not keep it down. Now feeling a bit anxious about trying this again later today. Really want to give the tablets a go before looking at alternatives. Any advice on the best way to take these tablets and to keep them down? Thanks!

Eat something and take them x

I have the exact same problem and just been represcribed for the second time and the taste isn't pleasant. I was advised to take with breakfast and a glass of orange juice! Apparently helps you absorb the iron faster and it does eliminate the taste of the tablets. I hope you find something that works for you! X

My iron tablets have a shiny coating that tastes sugary..... They don't taste bad at all..... X

I was told to take mine in the morning, on an empty stomach with a glass of orange juice then not eat for at least thirty minutes. I have had hyperemesis and been sick a couple of times, but mostly am OK.

Best way to take them in in the morning on a empty stomach with a glass of orange juice

@Sophie @Lizzie on page 5 it explains how taking iron with food significantly reduces absorption FYI https://www.theironclinic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/patient-information-for-iron-infusion-2025.pdf

@Mia I know it’s best to take it without but I end up being sick everytime

@Mia @Sophie Same, always better to take with food, keep it down then throw it back up again and get no benefit at all!

Liposomal formulas are usually the best in terms of absorption of actual iron and I never had a problem to stomach it, as well as no typical side effects https://lipolife.co.uk/product/liposomal-iron-capsules/?srsltid=AfmBOoo9uWjxaIxSHHpEcR0gu5VdOgdgzUViR4TUz_yUd85JwmF4F0w9

@Lizzie 🤣otherwise I’m like what was the point of that haha , yeah definitely

I've been taking liquid iron water, mix it with orange juice (high vitamin C) and that is helping me. I found the prescribed tablets also made me sick

Thanks so much girls! Bought some OJ yesterday and managed to take my tablet with no issues! So relieved! X

So glad that helped that's how I found it easy to take them as well plus the orange juice will boost the iron too so it's a double benefit for you 🤗

I have mind before bed with an orange juice. I know they say in the morning but I find it makes me feel gross so I prefer to be asleep. Better to take them in the night than not at all!

I can't tolerate iron tablets but take 2 sachets of spatone daily no issues. Hope you can get sorted.

I take mine in the afternoon on an empty stomach where possible. Big glass of orange juice with it really helps and the vitamin c helps absorption
