Mortgage and universal credit

Hello everyone, could I please ask if anyone would know if I could get a mortgage whilst having UC? We used to be together with my expartner in the accommodation through his job, but then he lost the job and the accommodation and we broke up. I stayed alone, so at the mo I’m in tiny 1 bedroom apartment and looking to get something bigger. As I don’t earn much, I got top up from UC. When I look at rents it would be cheaper for me to get for us shared ownership than to pay someone even more for 2 bedroom apartment. Does anyone know please if I could get mortgage whilst receiving UČ considering all together is cheaper than pay rent? Thank you very much in advance.

@Cara thank you. AI also told me I could be able to do it, but just quick search in Barcley doesn’t seem this way. Therefore I though some one here may have personal experience ☺️

I think naturally if you get top up from UC your income won’t be considered as enough and lenders would say it’s unaffordable? I may be wrong but again depends where you are in the UK and what you’re applying for xx

@Aimee true, but it’s enough to rent me a place which is more than what I would have paid for the rent with shared ownership.

It a tough one because, you would be assessed under the current circumstances and most likely be seen a liability to lenders or brokers, as financially you are not secure. This is also the same thing with 0 hour contracts and temporary or secondment contracts. It sucks because u are correct it be cheaper and financially you would be better off doing what you’re planning.

God never ask AI, It rubbish! Maybe call citizens advice bureau.... Sure they'll be able to advise!
